Don't mess with Texas...

Well, the single moms there, anyway.

This is different, I'll give them that.

(from the article; The founder said this:

But, he noted, “even if one concedes that it (probably) deters some crime, that has to be weighted against the (probable) consequence that it also increases the number of suicides or gun accidents."

Such things could *NEVER* happen in Texas.

I hadn't seen that. It's a great idea. Single Mom's deserve to be able to protect themselves as well as everyone else.

It's a stupid argument to say that it will allow people to commit suicide. For someone who actually WANTS to commit suicide is a gun the ONLY way that they can accomplish it? I wonder what percentage of suicides are committed with a gun? As if it made any difference. How stupid!

The same outfit is also active in Tucson. Their program includes training provided by The Warrior School, which is a local private arms training school of the highest repute. Looks like they're doing it right.

Would you concede that shooting oneself in the head is a rather effective method of committing suicide? If some poor woman takes a bunch of pills with the intent to kill herself, she has some time to change her mind. If she halfheartedly scratches her wrist with a knife, she can still get help, or at least someone could find her and secure medical assistance. However, if she points the gun to her head and pulls the trigger, there's no rewind button for her to press, is there?

I wonder if single mothers are often under a great deal of stress?

BTW, if single mothers are given free guns, shouldn't their children be given free guns as well? Given the stress issue I mentioned above, what if some mother flips out and tries to shoot her children? Shouldn't the children have an opportunity to defend themselves?

Are single fathers any less worthy of self-protection? Personally, I'd sooner support Krav Maga lessons for all. Might help with the (in)famous Texan weight problem as well.

Then again, the gun training could serve as a social occasion and much needed time away from home and work. Perhaps that would be a benefit in itself.

Speed, you are beyond help.

BTW, someone posted a link on this forum not long ago showing the highest average overweight by state. Texas wasn't in the top fifteen. Of course I'm sure you won't let any facts get in the way of your opinion. It's never seemed to stop you before.

Then there are single aunts, single uncles, single cousins, nieces, nephews, et al. This could really get out of control!

Why not just place boxes of guns at various street corners throughout the community, and just let whoever needs one help themselves?

You know, instead of handing out those boring mini-bags of M&M's at Halloween, I'm thinking of handing out Glock G36's to the kiddies. Should be small enough for little hands, and if during a playground dispute, some other kid whips out a Ruger Redhawk, at least it will be a fair fight.

FASTSTATS - Suicide and Self-Inflicted Injury

The CDC says that of approx 38K suicides, around half are committed with a gun.

Also:

Quote:
In 2010, the last year for which complete numbers are available, the number of gun deaths by suicide in the United States outnumbered homicides 19,392 to 11,078. If you add up all American gun deaths that year, including accidents, 3 out of 5 people who died from gunshot wounds took their own lives. Those figures are not an anomaly: With just a few exceptions, the majority of gun deaths in the United States have been self-inflicted every year since at least 1920. This is a startling fact, and one that forces us to realize that, no matter what we may believe about the Second Amendment, the debate over how to reduce the death toll from guns is, to a great extent, a debate about suicide prevention.

Why can't we let people who want to commit suicide do so? Cannot it be their choice?
