Rather have a Jetta diesel. At least it comes with a real transmission, not one designed for people missing a limb or two.

If I owned a Lamborghini Miura, I would relish the use of a manual transmission to extract the most driving pleasure and performance out of a vehicle. But if I owned some little sedan, and was stuck on the wrong side of the GWB toll booths during rush hour, I'll surrender my pride and just flick that lever into "D"...

There has been some talk about how acurate that 46mpg will be. If they dogged it out on the fuel set up - it could be. I would rather have some get up and go and sacrifice 3 mpg.

P.C. - I drive a manual in NYC. Not a problem unless you're a cripple or typical American fattie with bad knees.

The only exception I might make is for a DSG, which essentially works like a manual internally. VW also offers this. Chubby Cruz has a torque converter like a usual slushbox.

I like to drive fast on hilly and/or winding roads. Just a few weeks ago, I managed to overheat a Fiat 500's slushbox on a mountain road. This wouldn't have been a problem with a real transmission, since you don't get heating from the torque converter slipping and churning fluid.

Assembled in the US may be a better statement. The engine is a Fiat diesel a love child from the GM/Fiat venture in Italy.

Better our union parasites than their union parasites, all other things equal.
