Here's the deal. I don't really care to live past the point where I have too many system failures or I am living as a ward of the state or something of that nature. I don't foresee myself having a useful life much past 60. I agree there are some that do push that envelope. Not as many as those that don't. Odds don't favor me being self sufficient after that point. I can see even at 45, my hearing and sight are not what they were. It is harder for me to lose weight today than when I was 20. The body is in a decline regardless of what you say or do. You can slow it down TO AN EXTENT but my 20 yo body is NEVER coming back. At some point, it goes beyond what I am willing to live with. I don't see the prognosis as being good in the next 20, do you? So, if I can get to that age, I guess I am ok with it. Going past that isn't the goal for me. All there is to look forward to is a diminished body and even more limits on what I want to do.

So tell me, do you think that a struggle to go past that is worth it? I don't. Hence I don't put as much effort. Sure, I do eat all kinds of crap. Most of my food is home cooked so it cuts it down some. My aim is to make it to target and not drag it on and on and on. I am content to go in my 60s. I am not interested in stretching it out there and lowering my expectations. Take my parents. They are in their 70s and pretty active FOR THEIR AGE. Mom has arthritis and her fingers are bent as is her spine. Dad has his other geriatric issues. Adopted parents both are cancer survivors among other "slowing down" issues.

A wonderful loaf of French is still under $2 here. I don't eat a loaf a day so its a moot point to me and unless I were to contract some whey allergy there is very little chance of me ditching the bread. I just enjoy it and that's what life is about.

Now on the southern front there is a saying "Ribs and White Bread" which I won't go into details about.

I can't answer that - I'm 1.5 years away from 60. I don't have any (known) health issues. I don't feel like 20 anymore, but I am still able to do strenuous work (but I pay for it the next day). Of course, I see life slipping away when I am here stuck at work in the office but I'm nowhere near as fatalistic about it as you.

I was at my mom's house Saturday finally edging her driveway (after 3 years) She helped me sweep up...she's 93 and still on her own...

I don't even eat a loaf a week. I wish I could go over to my hot neighbor every time I wanted bread and borrow a slice or two. OTOH, if I could, I might eat bread (among other things) everyday. I suppose at that point, it might be worth investigating what the bread is made of.

That is just it. You pay for it the next day. I was up all night last week tossing and turning. I paid for it the next day and the day after that. In college, I could get drunk 3 nights in a row and still make it to class. My 20/20 vision is slipping away as is the hearing and I get tired more easily than I used to. As to slipping away of life in the office, I accept that. I go off a simple equation. If I am having fun, I pay. If I get paid, I am not having fun. I work to pay for my lifestyle but more important, it is my independence. I don't have to depend on you to do things for me. Your doing anything for me is a luxury. I can tell you to go hang yourself and still be doing it all myself. However, as I grow older, I am spending more and more time doing what I need to do as opposed to doing what I want to do. THAT is what makes my life slip away before my eyes. Seeing myself spend 3 days beating myself up for work that took me an easy day to do.

But by "on her own" is she doing everything she used to do or is she scaling back and getting help here and there?

Anyone who thinks 60 is old is sure to check out early. I can do everything I did in my 20's; most of it better and a lot I couldn't do then as I was too stupid to realize what's important.
Got bucked off a horse two weeks ago, but I had sense enough to control my fall and NOT hit the fencepost that broke my collarbone in a similar fall when I was 22. Youth is wasted on the young.
Personally, I look forward to being a burden to my children. The little feckers.

60 is an estimate but I figured my body would run down to the point I can't stand it by 70. I can't stand the idea of having to be physically dependent on someone else. You can have money but it can be gone. As long as I can take care of myself, even if I am broke, I can live with it. Rich and dependent? Keep it.

Yes, experience is good but being able to take physical punishment is also good. It takes me longer to heal from an injury today than when I was a kid. Very handy when experience and intelligence isn't enough.

As to being a burden on my kids. Can't do that. No kids. Didn't want them so we didn't have them. Even if I did, I stull would rather be dead than to be dependent on them or anyone else. When that day comes where I have to depend on others for my living, I have made plans.

Self fulfilling prophecy. You'll be sixty in the blink of an eye. Just when you're not looking. Better get busy.

Can I self fulfill my prophecy concerning winning Powerball? I know I done tried so many times but I never seem to win.

Get busy with what? Everything is already planned. Advance Directives and other things for when I cannot take care of myself. It doesn't take that long.

French bread is $1.48 @ Walmart. Pretty good stuff, but not near as good IMO as Albertson's French bread.

I would be very surprised if Wally's bread had less than 20 ingredients, 16 of which you don't need.

I was too conservative by about 6...

It's likely mixed some far away place (hopefully not THAT far away) and shipped frozen to your local WM for your enjoyment. Still may be a little better than the average fluff.

The stuff my Breadman churns out compares very closely to what I have had from a real French boulangerie. If I could shape it into a baguette and had the proper oven (and of course the flour, water and yeast themselves contribute) it would be damn close.
