Blew up a Duramax

April 12, 2013 8:12pm

I-80 Eastbound, pulling the Hill outta the valley.

So yea, was romping on it earlier in the day but nothing crazy.

Pulling I-80E outta laramie up the hill, cruise @ 80mph, egts @ about 950, boost at 12psi, coolant temp good, oil press good, everything good, starts ticking louder and louder.

I'm thinking wtf, as im pulling off its getting louder, look in my mirror im rolling white smoke. Look over @ my boost gauge and i can still make boost (thought i lost the turbo) Pull over, knock knock, drop into N, almost dies and i turn off the key. Get out, nothing leaking, no holes, everything looks just fine. Try to start it up. *thunk* seized tight..

Was a ****ty ass fri night...

Exploded a piston it seemed. Injector and glowplug were trashed.. engine had 217K

130K mile drop-in engine got manifolds, downpipe, new waterpump, and some different tuning

Anywho, truck has been back up and running for a couple weeks now.. took a month of work.. nice feeling to have a running truck...

It looks like an injector failed, turning it into a cutting torch.

I experienced that problem a few years ago with some C7 Cats, but we caught them before they got that bad.

Anyone else besides me marvel at the ability of some folks to just GET IT DONE. Engine done blowed up, remove engine, find replacement engine, put replacement engine together, put new engine back in, start it up, and DRIVE.

Something like what you just did would take me a year or six, even if I had the tools and skilz. Good on you, Ducky.

Chris W.

I don't see anything unusual or out of the ordinary by purchasing a car that needs an engine and installing a used engine in it.

We think an injector stuck open.. but they were dealer installed injectors put in 6K ago.. dealer tech said i might have been the injector, but with the tuning on it, it voided the warranty

iWrock: Theres a local guy who works at the dealer who does my tuning, pretty decent. Does anything you want, if you want it changed, call him, and he will reflash..
Might go with Idaho Rob or Kory Willis at some point though... Not that I'm not happy, just something different.
