I've scheduled to take the time off for it and the lovely Ms engatwork and I are considering riding up to Auburn to the Auburn, Cord, Duesenberg Festival this year. I'm on the fence about having to drive for 11 hours during Labor Day weekend though.

You hit one of my hot buttons. Words have meaning. The term "classic car" has been defined by the Classic car Club, and here it is:

CCCA Approved Classics

The Classic Car Club of America defines a Classic as a “Fine” or “Distinctive” automobile, American or foreign built, produced between 1925* and 1948. Generally, a Classic was high-priced when new and was built in limited quantities. Other factors, including engine displacement, custom coachwork and luxury accessories, such as power brakes, power clutch, and “one-shot” or automatic lubrication systems, help determine whether a car is considered to be a Classic.
here is the link:Classic Car Club of America ? Approved Classics

The link contains the complete list of all "Classic" cars as defined by the CCCA. Its a closed list.

Uninformed people, and the general public don't have this specific definition in mind, so they call a '57 Chevy, a "classic". I agree many of these are interesting, and memorable cars, many are miles stone cars.

I also understand that the general public doesn't care a bit what the term really means, they will continue to call anything "classic" that they wish to.

I saw a Minerva, once, at Fall Hershey. As it was coming off the trailer, the owner and I talked. He said it was "one of one"--meaning this car was the only one of this year and model ever made. How can you put a value on that?

Jay Leno has a very impressive Duesenberg collection including the one off streamliner that reportedly cost over $25k new.

Very impressive cars, I still think they are the best cars ever made.

Maybe, but there were others, in that time frame.
Marmons were pretty decent automobiles, too.

I saw a rolling chassis at Hershey, one year. They used what looked like the same type of rag joint on the driveshaft as my Mercedes.

The duesenbergs were most impressive cars. Although large they had advanced, powerful engines and much aluminum, such as in the rear end. Much attention was given to unsprung weight as an example, a wonderful concoction of racing car technology with road car realities.

I have never sat in one but did personally witness one driving around the grounds of the Gillmore Museum near kalamazoo about fifteen years or twenty years ago with my Dad. We also saw a large german armored Mercedes sedan there that day....with inch or more thick glass windows. I don't think they have the benz anymore. I believe it is worth duesenberg money now.

Be patient. Auburn is a small town and when the festival takes place it can feel as though half the country is jammed into Auburn. Festival time is not a good time if you specifically want to focus on the museum as many cars are out of the museum during that time.
