97 Suburban 6.5 td tranny slow to engage

Copying post on another forum -

Gist of the problem stated in item 8:

1. State model, year of vehicle and mileage:

1997 C2500 Suburban 6.5 with 182K miles

2. How long did you own the truck? Recent purchase?

Purchased with 150K miles about 6 years ago.

3. Any service engine light: yes/no. Intermittant check engine light?
This is called CEL or MIL

No CEL and no codes through OBD II port.

4. Fluid level okay with the engine and transmission warm? Check on
a level surface?

Fluid level within marks on dipstick. No tranny leaks or wetness.

5. Have you retrieved Codes? AKA DTCs Diagnostic Trouble codes.

No CEL and no codes through OBD II port.

6. Fluid color and smell? Red or Brown does the fluid smell burnt?

Looks and smells like the Castrol Dex VI I poured in 30K miles ago.

7. Speedometer reading correctly at the appropriate speed? Are the tires the within OEM specifications and size? Use your GPS and verify speed. electronic transmissions remember?

Speedo is accurate within 1-2 mph with OE size LT245/75-16 tires.

8. Is the transmission shifting normal? Is it shifting hard? Do recall the shifting symptoms or any shifting changes before or after the check engine light or after you retrieved codes.

Most of the time it shifts normally. Occasionally there is a harsh downshift after slowing almost to a stop such as when accelerating after making a right turn. Downshift timing seems appropriate but engagement of lower gear is abrupt.

9. Did you or anyone else conduct any kind of maintenance to the vehicle recently?

No.

10. Can you explain the type of driving? Heavy towing? Snowplowing?

Family use. No heavy loads or towing.

11. Typical weather. Arizona hot mild winters? Minnessota cold. Please explain.

Seems to happen through the range of weather common to San Jose, CA.

10. Any problems with driver commanded/selected shifting into any gear?
ie.. 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, Rev?

Nothing beyond slow engagement after first start of the day.

8. Describe symptoms: Does the transmission refuse to shift in first? Will it shift into second and just stay in second gear?

Right after the first start of the day, it takes a few seconds to get moving forward or in reverse when applying throttle after shifting into gear. It's fine once it gets moving until it rests overnight. Have another car that takes 2-3 seconds for D or R to engage and I can feel it engage. This is different. This is very smooth and 'slow motion' engagement which feels more like the TC has to fill or pressure has to build somewhere. It feels more like lag within the TC than clutches slipping. Have yet another car suspected of having a bad fluid coupling or seal that allowed coupling to drain overnight sending fluid level way up the dipstick. Similar performance/behavior thought the fluid level doesn't rise on the dipstick.

8a. TCC Locking? Is the transmission slipping in any gear?

I don't know for sure. It doesn't feel like the transmission is slipping other than described above.

8b. Is the transmission shifting into all FWD gears? At the
normal RPMs while the shift selector is in drive? Is it shifting later
than usual?

Shifts as expected.

Can your vehicle shift into all gears?

Yes.

If you have a tachometer can you "notice" all forward gears shifting if you are not sure if the transmission is shifting?

It shifts smoothly and I can tell by the tach that all gears are engaging in correct sequence.
