A show biz story....

Whitman was a big hit, but his act got old and he could not come up with a new one. He went broke and wound up living in a small trailer outside of Atlanta.

Then along came a guy with a UHF station that he had managed to turn into a Superstation on most cable systems. He was making enough money that when he heard about Whitman's situation he went to see him and asked if he wanted another shot at the big time.

Whitman agreed, so Ted Turner threw all his support behind him and ponied up the cash for a new album and a tour. He even got Whitman a spot on the Tonight Show where he was visibly nervous while he performed. Whitman was shocked to find that Carson was a big fan of his and was thrilled to have him on the show, and it took Slim some time to accept that people liked him; they really liked him.

He finally retired again, but he never moved back to the trailer.

The old ad is probably resting alongside the companion ad for Boxcar Willie.
