Dog story
My youngest sister's inlaws have a lovely cabin on Isleboro Island off the coast of Maine right on the water. We had the pleasure if spending some time on the Island back when my son Andrew was in still high school.
My sister had this large red dog which was half Irish setter and half Russian wolfhound named Max. Max was a large friendly dog who was so active that he could be a danger to people because of his size and exuberance. One day we went down to the shore and were fooling around. Andrew picked up a stick and threw it way out in the water. Max swam out eagerly and brought it back. Andrew picked up a larger stick....about the size of a mans forarm and threw it out as far as he could. Max swam out and brought it back, no problem. Andrew picked up a stick as big as an adolescent's leg and threw it out as far as he could. Max swam out and immediately brought It back. Now Andrew found a log that must have been five feet long and as big as a good sized man's theigh with a couple of protruding limbs about 2" in diameter, dragged it down to the water, waded out into the water til it was waist high and heaved the huge log out as far as he could....maybe 12'. Max swam out to the huge log and swam around it looked it over and headed back to shore.....but halfway back he turned around and swam back to the log. This time he swam around it twice, studying it carefully. But once again he headed back to the shore.....halfway back he turned around and swam back out to the log and swam around it three times looking for a point to grab it..... finally he gripped one of the protruding branches in his big jaws and swam slowly back into the shallow water until it dragged bottom. By this time we were all laughing and hooting in admiration of this wonderfully determined dog. But Max thought we were laughing at him and went over and laid down. After a while Andrew picked up a small stick and threw it out for max to retrieve but Max refused and refused any more fetching as long as we were there. What a day. What a dog!

Reminds me of the owner that kept throwing sticks in an effort to teach his dog to retrieve. After a few hundred tries the dog felt his owner had gotten the art of the retrieve down pat.

Thanks for the neat story of a very smart Dog. Clearly the Dog was thinking of how to pull the Log back and came up with a creative solution and acted on it.
A Friend of mine had a Dog that was 1/2 German Shepherd a 1/2 Wolf. One of the Dogs Toys was a Bowling Ball that the Guy had some how hooked an all Rubber Bungee Cord into one of the Holes in the Ball. Smaller than an adult Wolf but much bigger than a German Shepherd and was big boned. The Dog would grab the free end of the Bungee and whip the Bowling Ball around in the Air and did not mind the Bowing Ball hitting him in the Ribs. Back in the day when there were Mail Men instead of Mail Carriers the Mail Man used to whistle to antagonize My Dog into a barking Fit. The Dogs Teeth Marks are still on the inside Mail Slot at My Mothers House where the Dog would attack the Mail as it came through the Slot if the Dog happened to be in the House at the time the Mail arrived and no one got a hold of Her to keep Her away. One day the Dog and I were in the Back Yard and the Mail Man cam a whistling. I (this is when I was a Kid) opened the Gate and let the Dog out. The Dog went dead silent and crept down the Drive Way till it could peek around the corner and see the Mail Man. When She saw the Mail Man She let out a single tremendous Bark and took a run at the Mail Man’s Leg. The Mail Man attempted to us the Doggie Mace on Her but missed by several Feet (apparently it is hard to whistle and use Mace at the same time). My Dog passed within 1 inch of the Mail Mans Leg and zoomed over to a corner of the Front Yard and just sat there and glared silently at the Mail Man. Apparently My Dog really did not want to bite the Mail Man but made it clear that She could have bit him. The Mail Man never whistled when He came to our House again.

Indeed.
At 2 different times I owned 2 Dogs from the same Mother. Both were the runts of the Litter and both were what some would called Mutts. Both were smart Dogs. To this day I don't know how I did it but I was 5 years old and I trained My first Dog to do the basic Dog tricks. Unfortunately at the time My Father did not believe in getting the Shots for Pets and at less than 2 years the First Dog died of Distemper. The 2nd Dog the one that went after the Mail Man lived 14 years by which time I was an Adult.

The intelligence of some dogs is most impressive!
Others seem to be idiots! My Lovely daughter #1 has this little fluff mop houseslipper of a dog who has this most annoying whiney high pitched bark. Although he and I have been buds together many times he still often does not recognize me and barks as if I am an ax murderer when I come in the house....sometimes just when I come on from a different room.
