Octane Booster??
Just wondering who here uses octane booster?
I put some in my car last night, right before I filled the tank with premium 91 octane. My car seems to be running better than before, and the occasional hard starting has seemed to be less. The bottle says you can use it with every tank, but I would really not want to use it for every tank, I just decided to try it out for the heck of it. Car seems to run smoother too. I do not have my R-16 Resistor out either. Is it me, or does it seem that gas stations may very well be selling lower rated gas at the premium pumps? I have major suspisions about this, and might get a gallon can and have it tested. The only time it ever ran poorly and started poorly was when I put some 89 in there once to see how the car would run. Alon |
If the stuff coming out of the pump is really premium fuel, then there so be no effect from adding the octane booster. All fuel has the same energy content, regardless of octane. The energy of all automotove gasolines is around 115,000 BTUs per gallon. Diesel fuel has around 130,000 BTUs per gallon.
An octane rating of 91 means that the fuel has the same resistance to burning upon compression than a fuel with a mixture of 91% Octane and 9% heptane. The only way that a higher octane fuel would make a difference is if the fuel in the tank is of too low of an octane and the engine is having to retard the timing to prevent detonation and thus the power loss. |
Alon,
I for one would be very interested in what you found out by testing your gasoline. I too have suspisions that the gas retailers are not always honest and that they blend their shipments and mix lower octane fuel with premium. This would raise their profits and serve as a motive in an unregulated area of business. Or am I wrong, does the oil company who franchises the brand police this, they certainly would have an incentive to do so and protect the brand name. Anyway , like you I only have my empirical notions that the fuel changes octane from time to time. Let us know what you find out! |
