Thinking about getting another Benz

But it's sorta creepy. Here's the story ....

A long time customer drove one of those TE wagons. She kept it in tip top condition. She was very old and the other week, she got out of the TE and forgot to put it in park and the can ran over her and killed her. Her estate is coming up for auction soon, and I'm thinking about buying the TE.

Not the car's fault the owner shouldn't have been driving. If it's good and you can afford it get it. Hell, I'd love to have a Mercedes wagon.

QUESTION

Did you know this longtime customer? Only reason I ask, is I've noticed in my business how people often times, before passing, take solace in knowing that their house, car, etc., etc., is going to someone whom in their mind...will take care of the house, car, etc.. Obviously this lady physically wouldn't be aware if you owned the car, but her spirit will. And if she kept the car in tip top shape it was a source of pride for her....which you seem the best candidate to carry on. A little creepy, yes. But, as was already stated, maybe she shouldn't have been driving? I'd buy it.

Presumably your hearses were not equipped with a luggage rack.

I am not a fan of spark-ignited Benzes, but if you like this one and can get it for a good price, go for it.

Funny story: When I was in junior high, my parents bought a 1986 Dodge K-Car. This thing was a steaming POS, but the AC worked. This was important in the Atlanta area at the time. One day, Dad went to the IGA to get a newspaper. This particular K-car had an issue with a very high (like 3000 rpm) idle. As Dad found out, it also had an issue with slipping out of Park and into Reverse. He left the car running for a moment while he got the paper out of the machine, and it proceeded to put itself in Reverse. Dad tried to catch it, but didn't quite do it right, and ended up getting run over by his own car. A passerby, who was quite a bit younger than Dad managed to jump in the reversing POS and get it stopped. Dad had no major injuries, but spent a night in the hospital, and still has a scar on his back that looks curiously like a Playboy Bunny.

Why would you think that?

Possibly a little creepy I think. For me the fact that she may have been a longtime customer of mine and I knew her personally might impact my view of the car driving it around as a DD.

Even though it sounds like an unfortunate driver error accident, every time id work on the car, id be thinking, "this is the tire and rim that crushed Sarah", or, "This is the suspension component that Sarah's arm got caught in".

Would probably bother me over time.

I would also double check the shift linkage and the shift gate. Maybe she forgot to put it in Park, maybe there is a mechanical defect that caused it to jump out of Park.

If I knew her, I'd buy the car and honor her by keeping it in tip top shape.

I agree with this, but if you'd have JB3's sentiments instead, you might want to pass on it...

You can think of her when you are working on the front end, perhaps little bits or her will still be with you,

perhaps come loose and fall on you.
