One more reason to say "^$#% Verizon"

Instead of rolling out fiber-optic networking, which can be both extremely fast and resistant to storm damage, they're trying to push customers in parts of NY and NJ damaged by Sandy to crappy-arse wireless "phone" and Internet service.

Bruce Kushnick: Fire Island Erupts Over Verizon's Wireless Voice Link: New York AG Claims Verizon Violated Agreement

Sorry, if I want to have a business conversation that doesn't sound like dung, I want to either have it over a copper phone line, a phone line running over fiber, or VoIP running over a nice, fast, low-latency, hardwired or FiOS link. Staticky cell phone connections affected by atmospheric interference or a butterfly flapping its wings in Madagascar needn't apply. Hope the NY Attorney General sticks it up their arseholes and twists till they squeal like pigs. They took public funds to roll out fiber -- they'd better deliver.

If the damaged areas are to be rebuilt and be "on the grid" at all as far as electricity, connecting fiber to concentrators isn't a huge problem.

Bravo. Telecom in this country is a disgrace. Telecom companies are crooks.

I agree.

We only have cable out here and the cost is outrageous. For reasons that are unfathomable to me, Verizon cannot or will not run fiber around here.

The cable bill (triple play) is over $150. now and it goes up nearly every month.

You must have a smart phone and learn to love it. No pay phones, no newspapers, smart phones. Broadcast TV is under assault, gotta go. They must know your every move.

That would be great if their (or any) wireless network would have the same capacity and reliability as fiber to the premises.

The only capacity that matters is the capacity of their bank accounts. Wireless is king of the bank accounts. What you want or need is only important if it sticks to the bottom of their shoes.

Wrong: they're a public utility that accepted infrastructure funds from the state. Time for them to live up to their bargain or get fawked hard.

Breaking contracts is a good way to lose future business.

Question, why did it have to come to this? When you get a mortgage on a new house there are several draws. Why did someone give them the money all at once? Give them financing draws. You complete 10%, call me. I will inspect it and when satisfied, give you the money. You don't, I am out 10%
