Craigslist and data collection
Noticed a delay when searching for certain terms. If I search "S600" there is a long delay. If I search "crib" or "goat" there is little delay.
I think it is because of new data collection efforts being made at craigslist. This is based on experience at other websites. I don't use the recommended browser settings. |
Data collection? Sort of. They're just using a good search algorithm that stores/caches the results of more common searches on their server. Nothing to do with browser settings.

If I use a browser with tighter privacy settings I get the long delay searching "s600". If I use a browser with the recommended settings there is no delay. This is almost undoubtedly a data collection issue but I would like some insight if anyone has it to offer.

First observed this several days ago and nothing has changed since. The "tight" browser will not display pages at most intrusive sites. Those being media sites and other heavy marketing sites. Big Marketing is entering the craigslist arena, my guess.

If you query a system there is little you can do to prevent them from taking that search data. Also it would likely not have any effect on your browser, unless your browser is trying to autofill or you have a proprietary app/widget/plugin trying to collect or process data. For example an ad blocker can take a little longer because it will analyze code and determine whether to block it.
Also just about everything you do online is tracked to some degree and made into money. Craigslist would not be any different. |

More importantly, what are you looking at S600's for? They will suck all your money out of the bank.
