I think similar situations are pretty common in Dubai and probably other affluent middle east countries. Citizens of less affluent places such as Indonesia, India, Bangeledesh are imported to do work that the "emirates" (Dubai citizens) don't want to do. They are often taken advantage of including confinement and sexual abuse, passports confiscated by their employers and if they complain they are deported. being financially desparate they often endure so they can send money home.

In Dubai the population of citizens comprises only about 10% of the country. Citizenship is tightly controlled and you get it by birth pretty much solely.
