It happens. A friend of mine tore down the wrong garage in Indy one time. He said the owner of the garage watched him tear it down and said nothing. I guess he wanted a new garage.

^ Wow. Said nothing. I'd almost think he should get nothing in that case.

That's probably what the insurance adjuster said.

It happens, he probably just hit the jackpot since now the city will have to settle. Lawyer time.
Than he still has the dirt left which has value and can be sold.

Sorta like when someone hits an old rig of mine (happened twice on older vans). I get back a small portion of what I've paid out in insurance over the years.

I would demand that they build a structure of the same size and shape.
Unless I didn't like what was there, then I would be gracious and negotiate for absolute max value of the old structure, with rebuilding costs included... Definitely a windfall for the owners.

Wouldn't this be the contractors fault and not the city?

I would certainly hope so, unless the city gave the demo contractor the wrong address....
Then the guy who lost the house is likely screwed....

I know of this President that invaded the wrong country and everyone was just standing there and said nothing.

The contractor if at fault should have insurance for it. If not I would think the city would have to pay.
