Iron sight shooting...

The longest Iron-Sights Rifle shots, 1,500 yards, 17-inch plate. - YouTube

You guys will get a kick out of this! That's skill! Plus its with an old Italian war horse.

Not bad for a 112 year old rifle!

Billy Dixon knocked an Indian off his horse at a distance of over one mile. This was with a Sharps Rifle at the second battle of Adobe Walls.

And that was with an iron sights rifle he had never fired.

However it did take him three tries before the third shot hit the target.

That's some good shooting there. The longest range I've connected with iron sights is 500 yards, and I was shooting an M60E3 from a tripod at a much larger target, an old truck body out at one of the ranges at Camp Shelby, MS. I'm happy that I can pretty consistently hit a gallon milk jug at 100 yards with my AK.

Yeah, I'm a hunnert yard guy, too. And that's with a scope. Back when I had young eyes I used a peep sight and was good to 150 or so. Fortunately for me there isn't much long-range shooting in this state.

The sights in general and sight radius on the AK aren't really good for long range shots. I noticed shooting my cheap Romanian AK within a couple days of shooting a GI M16A2E3 (Seabee special-just like an A2, but with full auto instead of three round burst) that my group size at any given range was cut in half shooting the M16. The peep sight and longer sight radius help a lot. The few times I shot at the 200 yard range in Woolmarket, MS, I could hit the 6" bull on the target most of the time, except from the standing position, with the 16.

It was of course when my eyes were much younger, but when in basic I could hit the silhouette targets at 350 meters at will with an M14.

When you get out 600 or 1000 it involves more than extremely proficient gun handling. At those ranges you must have a good understanding of the effects that temperature and density altitude have on the shot.

My hat is off to the guy.

The Tom Selleck movie Quigly down under (I'm not sure of the title) featured a special sharps rifle which I believe to be very similar to the one pictured.

The legend from that part of the world, which is supposed to have come from Chief Quanah Parker himself, was that the shots were falling short so there was no need to move. Then one shot hit the guy next to him and knocked the fellow off his horse.

Another tall-tale is that Dixon was shooting high to make the rounds fall just short of the two Indians. That would encourage them to stand still and taunt him. According to Chief Parker that is what they were doing.

So Dixon fired two shots that fell short, adjusted his aim, and hit the Indian square.

This was alluded to in Lonesome Dove where Robert Duvall's character does the same thing while shooting at an Outlaw.

It all sounds rather far fetched to me, but that's the way legends are. The only thing that is known is that the Indian was hit and Chief Parker, who was sitting on his horse in the same area, was able to point out years later the exact spot where the targeted Indian was located.
