Carbon Credits; Good Capitalism

I did not see the beginning of the TV Show but the Vestergaard Company found out that in Kenya Africa due to impure water they were having to Boil their Drinking Water.

Besides using up the local Forest a open Fire dumps a lot of CO2 into the Atmosphere.

The Vestergaard Company supplied over 90,000 Free Water Filters that were Good For 3 years so that the People could have Clean Drinking Water and got the Carbon Credits for the decreasing the Wood Burning that would have been done to Boil Water and made a profit selling the Carbon Credits.

I knew a guy that made a ton of money in the early 80's brokering carbon credits.

I really do not understand why anyone would be against it except that they do not understand how the programs work.

They think Al Gore invented them and so they are bad. I am not making this up. A fellow told me this with a straight face.

....but he did invent the internet, right?;)

The carbon credits thing evolved out of the American Enterprise Institute as a way to deal with industrial pollution. Later it was recognized that the carbon credit would also impact global warming due to CO2.

It amuses me that nowadays people thing it's a purely Democrat plot. At first Democrats hated the idea because it would expand wealth opportunities instead of spreading pain. Now Republicans hate it because Democrats embraced it.

It's a way to manipulate the market to address an issue ordinarily not directly within the purview of free market capitalism.

The guy I knew that did this was a hard core Conservative. He thought the John Birchers were all a bunch of Commies.

He was also very stringent in his dealings. He saw the government as the enemy of everyone and was hoping for the day he would be drug into court so he could provide the proof that everything he was was above suspicion. That day never came and it was the only thing he regretted.

He was also one of the few people outside of a major oil company that anyone trusted to do a deal on a handshake. He always had the contracts, but all it took was a phone call and if he knew you the contract could wait a few days.

He finally retired, moved to a third world country, bought a drilling rig and spent the rest of his life going from town to town drilling water wells. For free.

But did he know what the definition of 'debt'?

Co2 does not cause global warming. Global warming and cooling are periodic natural occurences. In the specific case of Co2, is has been shown that in warming cycles, CO2 levels rise 400-500 years AFTER the warming occurs. it is due to the coca cola effect - warm a liquid, and gas in solution (like seawater) will come out of solution.

People are suckers.

It's just another scam. Esoteric, but a scam. Collect rain water off of the roof and you don't have to boil or filter it. Bechtel still might want you to pay them for the water. People survived for eons without your scams.

For some people saying "capitalism" is just another way of saying "scam" so forgive me if I am being redundant.

I believe that this is a half truth.
You have to ask yourself if during a natural Global Warming trend it is a good idea to add more CO2 to the mix.

The question is simply are We be better off adding more CO2 to the Atmosphere?

Water from the roof will still be exposed to contaminants on the surface of the roof, providing, of course, that you have a roof
And, relying on rainwater for survival is a good way to die of thirst.

Well.... the prevailing idea from some is that because Climate Change cannot be completely, 100% proven at this time, then it must all be patently false and nothing more than the agenda of the other end of the political spectrum.

Removing the partisan blinders when examining the ideas presented in the science of Climate Change might cause some to agree that hedging our bets now, could be a very smart idea for future generations.

I liken it to the acid rain of the 80's.... no one believed it was true, bunch of tree-hugging liberals with crack-pot science.... No way we're going to spend a penny cleaning up our waste based on this BS.... and it was eventually proven to be true, after considerably more extensive damage to our eco-systems.

There are others here who will start the hue and cry about legislative interference with the markets...blah blah blah.... Some things a society does actually aren't going to be for the immediate gratification of the current generation, but need to be for the benefit of the next generation...
Unless we want to be the Onceler....

What do you do for Water when it does not Rain?

Concerning Capitalism. On the same day I saw a show on Farmers in India whou bought the Monsanto BT Cotton Seed. Also they had no choice because that was the only Seed the Seller would sell them.

The BT Seed is genetically engineered and supposed to give a higher yield and be resistant to a certain Bug.

Of coures it did not work for the Farmers. Another type of Bug ate up the Crop and they were dependent on Rain to Water the Crop.

The BT Cotton Seed You needed Irrigation and special Furtilizers (which of course Monsanto would sell if a Farmer that has on ly 2 Acres of Land can afford that).

So the appearance is that Capitalism created a Manolopy by not allowning the old natural seed to be sold. Used the Farmers as Guneapigs to the extent it ruined some of the Farmers.

And the Gentically engineered Seed has to be bought. The Seeds from it will not grow.
The show said Monsanto has 90% of the World Wide Seed Sales.

Industry in the USA does not want to change emitting CO2 because it would cost them some loss of profit and they simply don't what any sort of Government Regulation of any sort.

World Wide the Businesses in Emerging Countries much worse and don't give a dam about their own People let alone the World Population. Now that US Businesses are more and more involved in World Business they are doing the Same.

On the other End is that when a Business is World Wide it is so powerful it is difficult to regulate by a single Country Government.

In many Emerging Nations many People would exchange having a Job even if they knew it would cause them an early death to try to get themselves and out of near starvation Poverty. People did that here I the US also.

They You have the fact that the Big Companies are so powerful the effect the economies of Countries World wide and can and do cause economic issues to get their way.

This is an awful thing to say but when Communism was around Capitalism
had something to fear.
With careful Planning what is there to stop Capitalism from doing what ever it wants for profit.
If the large Employers in a Country get together they can break a Country.
