Do what I do, create a Larry Bible online persona before searching for pressure cookers...

No Swat team, just police detectives.

This was based on activity on a work computer that some idiot IT ratted about at a job where she was let go, NOT on a report from Google. As an IT person, I choose to be deliberately blind to history and personal files -- not right to pry, and I'd rather not be responsible for a false police report.

And they even managed to do their thing without breaking down doors, killing dogs, or terrorizing anyone.

A raid with a gentle touch.

As a company, would they not have some responsibility for activities conducted on their computers? If IT has has the ability to monitor the use on company computers and chooses not to, is there any responsibility on the corporate side? I would think so.

Solution of course is not to create the ability, unless it's an industry where such an ability is required. I certainly discourage even creating such an ability unless necessity for it can be demonstrated. Storing all corporate e-mail is one thing, even blocking outside e-mail services, but logging all Web access and having someone actually read the logs is a big waste of fawking time and money. And if you're logging, then NOT examining the logs creates more exposure, thus better not to collect in the first place.

I'd rather take a tiny extra risk of a lawsuit than be a snitch.
