Stripping paint from old furniture...

A few years ago, we obtained two old pressed back chairs...both of them have seats that are split that need repairs. I finally decided to undertake the project, and decided that all the old paint should be removed as well...that was a stupid idea I had.

I've used Citristrip in the past with good results...but not on this stuff. It took the first layer up, leaving about 4000 other layers intact. I think the paint is laughing at my attempts.

The heat gun did a better job, but there still at least one layer left that is being a real PITA.

Does anyone have a good suggestion...other than gasoline and a match?

If the paint won't come off without use of nuclear weapons, can't you just sand it smooth and paint over it (test what paint will adhere to it)?

I'd like to finish it off with some stain and tung oil finish...I want to see the wood, not years of paint.

I let it sit for awhile with the Citristip on...it's actually starting to finally eat up that last couple of layers. I'll post pictures of it later...the wood is beautiful!

I used peel a way when we de-leaded our 1860's house- took 140 years of paint down to the wood, and if your time is important, it does the work for you- work it into crevices and profiles and it pulls everything off. I will not waste my time with anything else when stripping paint. Check it out.
