Article about Million Milers

Interesting article from May on AOL about a million mile Honda Accord. Mentions other million milers too, including a 240D...

I noticed in the story, the guy bought it several years old, with already a lot of miles on it. I'd like to see the contemporaneous documentation, and actual inventory detail of parts and whole components replaced, and their associated costs, including labor on the car as well. None of these possibly "tall tales" ever include the details of evidence to conclusively prove their authenticity anyway. So, it's hard to buy in to it.

I'll take my 1971 IH Cub Cadet over that rather new Honda, any day.

In Irv Gordon's case, his P1800 Volvo has every receipt, parts order, etc since new. The same dealer he purchased it from, has serviced the car since delivery.

A friend of mine recently sold her '91 Accord EX. The odometer was out of commission for a while, so the actual mileage is an estimate, but it was somewhere in the ballpark of 300,000. Maybe she sold too soon.

When I worked in a junkyard, I used to take note of the mileage on the cars we got. The highest I saw was on a Honda with 376,000 (I also found a $5 bill under the driver's seat). I also saw a Toyota Camry with over 350,000, and Subies over 300,000 were a common sight. We also got a few Crown Vic taxis with over 300,000 on them. Hondas and Toyotas were usually in the 240,000 mile range. Domestics other than Crown Vics were usually around 160,000. The only things we routinely got with less than 100,000 were Mitsubishis. I don't think I'll ever buy a Mitsubishi.

The real issue here is who would want to drive a HONDA for a million miles. Booooring.

True but I can't think of any vehicle I'd want to drive for a million miles, whether it would last that long or not.

he bought it with 74k on it at 6 years old. Credit given where credit is due, he personally put 926k on it, and from the story, it can be assumed he has maintenance records of his meticulous process, enough to get a free car from honda at least.

This is an impressive achievement, even more so that he did it in Maine, and was fighting rust issues as well. The car still looks very good, id be interested in seeing the inside of the car, how the seats held up and so on

most surprising to me though is that he's a mechanic, and as a former mechanic, my general impression of most mechanics is that they go through cars like Hugh Hefner goes through women. Im amazed he was that faithful for that long.

He bough it with 74,000 miles. Even if the car had had an engine AND transmission replacement at that point, he still ran the replacements for 925,000+ miles!

I actually saw this car outside of our local Market Basket a few years ago. It had a sticker on the back of it that read "millionmilejoe.com", and I was confused because the thing looked so clean & rust-free... the thing looked better than many >200,000 mile cars that I've seen. Anyway, I went home, Googled it, and was shocked to learn that the car (at that point) had 900,000+!

You need to do what I did: drive a 1998-2002 Honda Accord with a 5-speed. Fuuuuuuun. Honestly, the clutch is light & fast with a nice engagement point, the shifter is light with short throws and a nice grip... it made our Corolla feel like a truck.

Reason I found the article is I was searching for info on Hondas as I'm considering picking up a Honda Accord Wagon. I want an auto but they seem incapable of making a decent auto transmission so I might have to consider a manual one if I can find one.

Go with the stick! If the Honda stick I drove is any indication, they are blast!

I don't like sticks. If Honda could build a decent auto I'd have one without hesitation. Only reason I'd be prepared to use dinosaur technology (which is what I have to do on my current vehicle since it's a stick) is because of all the trouble with Honda auto tranny's.

I am not happy with cars that have exceeded the average lifespan of their type by a wide margin. Metal fatigue in some area or other can erupt. If in some areas it can be very dangerous.

Additional issue may be the frequency of needed parts replacements can be a bear. Reliability may be a factor as well unless you really stay on top of things.
