Need a 427 Cobra?

As I recall the story...

Shelby registered a bunch of VIN numbers during 1966 for Shelby Cobras. The car was based on an AC Ace, but since this was to be a US built car it had to have a US VIN number and what not. He registered more VIN's than he ever built cars.

And then some sharp lawyer pointed out that 1966 Cobras were going for big $$$ and that Shelby could finished the 1966 run with the VIN numbers he had. Somehow the DOT gave him a pass on all of this, likely because he was Carroll Shelby and the number of cars would only be about 100 total.

I think the new price was $500,000 or so, but I could be wrong.

Anyway.... There is one coming up for auction via Government Surplus Auctions at Government Liquidation.

Check it out.... and feel free to fill in any blanks in my description.

The description calls it a "reproduction".

How does this car, and others there including a bastardized Jag and a good looking K5 Blazer end up in gov't auctions?

Soldiers or other gov employees who quit making their storage payments most likely. That and drug cars.

I used to have one for a beater. Boring. The Ferrari Enzo is much more engaging.

Had to be a reproduction with a chebby motor. I have a hard time imagining Shelby building one with a chebby.

I agree. And the 500K price? Reduce it by a factor of 10 and you'll be in the ballpark.

Wrong engine really hurts the price. the rest of the detail work, good as it might be, does not compensate.

The story is not entirely true, the California Department of Motor Vehicles would only issue the cars titles stamped for off-road use. Only nine "Completion" Cobras were built.

This one according to these guys is not even remotely an official Shelby built kit.

Yes, it is a reproduction that was produced by Shelby in his own shop and it also carries a 1966 VIN.

Did you not read the background story I laid out?

Wow. It's a good thing you guys are here to correct me on this.

Now contact Shelby and correct them. They are apparently under the illusion that they are still building cars.

Yes they still build the cars, but they make rollers to be completed by an authorized dealer and they don't use 1965 issued vins.
