Question Value of 1992 M103 engine &transmission?

My hobby car is a 1992 300TE with M103 engine, with a few miles short of 180,000 miles. All accessories work perfectly as does car. I am a MB tech. The motor and transmission I removed from another of my 124's a 1992 300 E that was hit from behind and totaled. For that one I have the complete service history since new. Many, many parts have been replaced with new parts when the older ones were not up to my standards. Last stuff I did was new, cap and rotor, radiator, intermediate and rear muffler, new rotors and pads and Michelin tires.

I have only 4 spaces to keep vehicle inside garages so I would like to part out. I've had fun working on this old car but it's now time to move on so I can work on my next hobby car, an older Porsche.

So what would value of that engine and transmission with all accessories be worth? Or even if sold as a whole car.

Maybe $700-900 for the motor and trans?

I paid $500 for a M103 with 85,000 on it a few years ago.

Maybe more if the trans has been rebuilt.

I see 100k mile M103s list for ~400-500 out here in CA.

The transmission might be solid, but that kinda mileage would scare most people off.

Our local U Pick It junkyard offered me $2200 for the whole car, but I felt I could get more if I sold the motor, trans and all accessories.

They of course have seen the car and the records of service.

Ron,

When did MB drop the M104 engine in the W124 line? Sometime in the early 90's is my understanding. If it matters to your project.

FWIW: Answered: the M104 replaced the M103 in 1990.

Around here a 200k mile 300E brings about $2,000. That's a staggering offer from a junkyard.

If its such a good car, why not sell it whole? Save yourself time and get more money.

I just finished showing it to a gentleman. I had him look at it first while on the lift, and then he test drove it. He will pay $3000 if he can get his daughter to agree for him to buy it. She had previous told him not to buy the car, so I'm not that hopefull. Personally I would think if my parents were buying me a car I drive what ever they bought.

Shoot...I've had my 300E for sale for 2 months here and there's hardly been any attention. A junkyard will give you 2200 for it? I'd take that.

If you saw, drove and reviewed records on car you'd see why it's worth what I think it is.

I sold the car with all the spare parts, and there were a lot for $3000.

Bought a Toyota Corolla S Plus to use as my daily driver. It gets about 2x the mileage on regular gas. That's about twice as much as anything else I have.
