Locals torch speed camera

I drove by this around 8:00 am Saturday. Several cars were parked nearby while the drivers took pictures.

I guess the locals were none too pleased with the installation

Portable unit monitoring speeds in a school zone. Probably high school douchebaggery, not the civil unrest the camera haters would love.

I am not displeased with what I've just read. I've heard that you can also disable a speed or redlight camera without permanently damaging it by wrapping it in cling film.

I also heard that there's some sort of builder's foam they sell in hardware stores that can be squirted into a vent hole in the camera housing that totally mucks it up. Apparently popular in France.

Sounds like Great Stuff (a spray-in insulation that expands as it dries and sticks like heck to everything).

A RUDE motorcyclist who deliberately set off 26 different speed cameras giving German police the finger at each one has been fined £4,000.

In the late 60's, early 70's LTV (Ling-Temco-Vought) came out with the first workable speed camera. They installed several of them on SH 303 in Arlington, Texas.

They were mounted on poles in the median strip. People would climb the poles and spray paint the glass port in front of the lens. So the poles were made higher and fences were built to keep people from getting to them.

Others would shoot them from the sides, so they armored up the cases.

Finally people would walk up to them and hit the glass with bricks so the photos were of nothing but a shattered piece of safety glass.

They finally had to go to portable units that were truck mounted, but these cost so much to operate that no city would buy them.

There are still a few of these installed on the service roads of D/FW airport, but I don't know if they are hooked up.

The cameras are really just now showing up in HoCo MD. Signs announcing their presence have been in place for a fair amount of time. I believe this torched one is the first one I've seen in HoCo.

Now Montgomery Co is another story. Damn things are everywhere.
In the Olney area where I used to live, I know of at least 6 of these things.
The two I pass daily do a good job of slowing traffic for about 100 yards, as most people are now long used to them. A rapid braking from 45 or 50MPH to 30 in a short distance, then a rapid acceleration immediately after passing seems to be the typical driver behavior.
