That's not what I recall.

Doctor Grant, a Gov't. employee, played by Kurt Russell did in fact land the 747 - whatever system you're describing was not employed. It was quite a feat, if you haven't watched the movie, you might want to. Doctor Grant saved the day!

Of Note: Apparently there is also a "Manual" ALS.

Traditionally autoland systems have been very expensive, and have been rare on small aircraft. However, as display technology has developed the addition of a Head Up Display (HUD) allows for a trained pilot to manually fly the aircraft using guidance cues from the flight guidance system. This significantly reduces the cost of operating in very low visibility, and allows aircraft which are not equipped for automatic landings to make a manual landing safely at lower levels of look ahead visibility or runway visual range (RVR). Alaska Airlines was the first airline in the world to manually land a passenger-carrying jet (Boeing 737) in FAA Category III weather (dense fog) made possible with the Head-Up Guidance System [3] [4]

After 911, 'Really surprised H.S. didn't force FARs to be promulgated installing
a Big Red "Hijack" button hidden somewhere in the cockpits that would automatically and irrevocably have the Autopilots initiate ALS to the nearest
commercial airport.
(The word "Hijack" would ,Of course be in the Navajo for "Alert" HAIHDESEE)

A friend of mine was once a helicopter tech/mechanic/designer. One day he was told to install a system in a medium sized ship like the Coast Guard flies but no one would tell him what it was for. This was in the late 80's.

So he did, and it took about a week. Lots of wires, servos, black boxes and then another person came in and tested it. Neither of them were to speak to each other and all of it was Top Secret. He could tell from the positions of the servos that it had something to do with the operation but he could not tell how.

Then one day he was told they were going for a test flight. He was going along in case anything went wrong, but since he did not know what was supposed to go right he wondered what he was there for.

They lifted off from the Dallas area, hovered a bit, and then the Pilot punched some numbers into a keypad and the ship started moving. It flew to New Orleans and landed on the roof of a building. The Pilot sat there the entire flight and never touched a thing.

So it can be done. But even with such systems I don't ever see the FAA allowing aircraft to be flown without a Pilot somewhere in the mix. A drone might come close, but I am sure someone somewhere would still be in control.

Funny, back when Obama said that corporate jet owners should pay more taxes, many on this forum supported his position. Personally, I was astounded at the number of posts by members of this forum that stated that NOBODY needs an aircraft.

Apparently, according to some forum members, a corporate aircraft serves no useful purpose.......

Of course there were many that supported the position Husky. There are many tax and spend lefty loonies around. Their view is that those who earn the money have no right to keep it. The people earning the money are supposed let the government take it away from them, because the government knows much better what to do with it than does the person that WORKED AND EARNED IT.

It is amazing how it happens isn't it.

Give it another year and watch what starts to happen.
