Don't think they're not here - in the Deep South......

I ran across a big, fat 3' long one on the roadway near me immediately after a rainstorm. They love rice paddies, because they're thick with crawfish to feed upon - as the 6' one in Arkansas was found near...

Farmers say they found a giant cottonmouth snake in Carlisle | thv11.com

from the news article:"Arkansas Game and Fish officials could not confirm the snake was a cottonmouth by looking at the picture. Officials remind the public it is illegal to kill snakes unless they are threatening you."

Well, yah, but:

It's said that under the law that vicious animals get "one free bite"

The skin pattern shown in the video at 1:18 is quite different from any I've ever seen.

ILLEGAL TO KILL SNAKES?????????????????????????????????????

I've never heard of such a thing.

I have intentionally killed several poisonous snakes in my life. If they are posionous and on my place, they are a threat, and if can, I'll kill 'em graveyard dead every chance I get.

I have unintentionally killed quite a few snakes with a hay baler over the years, usually non poisonous chicken snakes.

Cottonmouths have a better warning system than a rattlesnake. They STINK! Once you know what they smell like, you can smell one that is fifty feet away.

Yes, the cottonmouths I've seen are mostly black looking.

Just be sure to have an extra knife or gun with you that you could plant on the snake to CYA.

Cottonmouths are very agressive. We used to hunt birds at a friend's family rice farm and it was not unusual for cottonmouths to come TOWARDS you instead of away from you when they saw you. Nasty, stinking VENEMOUS asshats of a snake. I lived on an old farm in the MS Delta area once and a creek ran through the place. It was sick with cottonmouths and they were all over my yard. I killed loads of them, and eventually borrowed a neighbors pig to control them. Pig liked eating snakes.....

the coloring is unusual.... I cant tell from the pictures (delightfully terrible) that it is a cotton mouth.... I see them all the time (makes a hell of a mess when you hit them with a mower) here as AH neighbor installed a giant friggin retention pond and we also have a lake across the way..

Pigs have a hide that is so thick that when the snake strikes them the fangs cannot get through the skin.

I have seen a wild hog take a .357 to the head and just shake it off. It reminded me of the Waco Kid's advice to Bart in Blazing Saddles... Don't shoot Mongo. It just makes him mad.

A friend of mine has a Bushmaster at his ranch to deal with them. I have knocked them down with an 8 mm Mauser, but the .223 seems to deal with them just as well although you have to hit them a time or two.

And they eat everything. A cottonmouth would just be a light snack, but they would never pass one by.

And I agree with Larry 100% on this. Kill 'em all, diamondbacks, copperheads, etc.....

But if you shoot a pig between the eyes a 22 will do nicely. my dad used to shoot them on the farm when they were butchering from about age 8 or 9 with his single shot winchester 58(?) not sure of the number.
