Navy shipyard shooting in DC

At least one person who reportedly is attached to the Navy in some manner has shot about a dozen people, several fatally. It is reported the gunman is dead and he was an African American man in his early 50's. Two other people were sighted who are thought may be connected and are being sought. No motive for the shooting has been identified as yet.

I watched it on Fox news at lunch and heard info in my car from NPR just now too.

According to one witness he was upstairs on the 4th floor. If this is a military facility how the hell did he get up there? Don't they have security?

Clearly this couldn't have happened if his gun had been legally registered and had he attended gun safety classes.

I'll give you a hundred dollars if we attack Syria today tomorrow or the next day.

So you think the president put this fellow up to this so he can benefit from the distraction? You are really getting silly now.

no, I think that you fail to recognize sarcasm as posted. BTW, if we attack Syria, you owe me a hundo, payable to my favorite charity, the Special Ops Warrior Fund.

Sigh; I guess the only way to stop this insanity is for everyone to turn in their firearms now.....

The Washington Navy Yard isn't a traditional "shipyard" where USN ships are overhauled, drydocked, etc. The Anacostia River isn't that significant water way. The WNY is, however, the oldest military facility in the nation. Mostly office buildings now. The NAVSEA Command and other commands are HQ'd there. The CNO also has his official residence there.

"The Washington Navy Yard, the oldest military installation in the nation, is home to several major Navy commands and other offices, including the Naval Sea Systems Command, where Monday’s shooting is believed to have taken place. About 16,000 employees, both civilian and military, work at the yard.

The historic yard, which includes 2.2 million square feet of office space along the Anacostia River, has undergone a major renovation and expansion over the last 15 years. The Naval Sea Systems Command, which employs some 3,000 workers at the Yard, is the largest of the Navy’s five systems command and is responsible for designing and engineering ships, shipboard weapons and command systems."

AFAIK, the USS Barry, DD 933, a museum piece from the 50's, is the only warship at the Yard.

The US Navy National Museum is also there. It is open to the public.

Most of those killed were probably civilians or Govt. employees.
Still, dead is dead. An outrage.

odd occurence, one shooter dead, another being hunted. military type fatigues, long gun, pistol, mistakes about dead man's identity. workplace violence or terror? will we ever know?

There is a lot of noise now about how the guy was a convicted felon with a CHL.

But the facts are... He was a holder of a CHL, and one day he fired off a round in his home by accident and it went through the roof. He was arrested for discharging a firearm in the city limits (in Fort Worth) but he was never charged with the crime. This is likely due to the accidental nature of the 'crime'.

The question of intent comes up here. He did not intend to fire the weapon, so he did not commit a crime, and the Judge in Fort Worth dropped the whole thing.

However the record of the arrest is public record, so some news outlets are just assuming he was tried and convicted just because he was arrested.

One of my summer neighbors works at the BATF in DC. They're probably all going BATSHT right now!!!
Actually, I just called her and she's breezing out to VA. Lots of folks must have left early. She says that that part of DC is bad news. Really seedy.
