Just sayin'..............
I thought Daimler owned a significant share of this company or did they sell it?

I wonder is that is that system that a cousin showed me on a CAT tractor. It injects fuel into the exhaust to burnt up soot, yet, you are not burning more fuel....

No. This is a completely different operation to control NOX emissions. Its use reduces the need for regeneration of the particulate filter, which does require fuel to be added to the exhaust.

A lot of confusion here... Diesel Exhaust Fluid is sprayed into the exhaust to catalyze NOx emissions. Modern cars also have a Diesel Particulate Filter, which BTW is very similar to the trap oxidizer MB tried out in 1985-1987, which collects soot and is then heated up periodically to burn it off. This heating is usually done with fuel injected during the exhaust stroke.

My Passat uses DEF and has a DPF. Refilling the DEF / Adblue tank is a non issue... it goes 15,000-20,000 miles on one fill and the fluid is readily available and about as expensive as wiper fluid.

Adblue type emissions systems are more efficient than the alternatives, which is why the Passat gets better fuel economy than the smaller Jetta and Golf... the non-def system on the smaller cars robs more power and fuel.

Not so much the cost but what happens when you run out? From what I am reading, your car is hobbled.

DEF or "Ad-Blue" as the auto makers call it is available at most truck stops, auto supply stores and even Wal-Mart sells it. Shouldn't be an issue to find, and again, only needs to be topped off every 10K miles or so when you need to do an oil/filter change. You have a larger chance of running out of fuel than you do of running out of DEF (Ad-Blue).

Adblue as expensive as wiper fluid? I haven't priced wiper fluid, but Adblue can be found for about as low as $7 per gallon (a Mercedes ML diesel has a 7 gallon tank) and the usage varies with the engine output. Dealerships, the choice of many new owners, have been known to charge Mercedes owners up to $400 for a full Adblue service.

Just came back from Ontario, for instance. We drove all day and reached Dryton at 0300 hrs. From International Falls at at midnight to Dryton, there was absolutely nothing. I guess my point is that this is now another "must have" item. I can get gas at every fuel stop as I always say but I cannot get diesel at every fuel stop. Truck stops, sure. I tend to fill the tank and run it down as low as I can get because I hate to keep getting my hands dirty and stinky with fuel and all the DEF does is make sure there is one more thing for me to think about.

There is nothing more than filling the DEF tank to a "DEF Service." I have no idea why Mercedes charges so much unless they are including a full flush of the old DEF from the tank. This is done because I understand there is a shelf life for DEF and if you do not drive enough miles in a year to use up the full tank of DEF, you should flush out the old DEF. I don't understand why it is of concern to run out of DEF when you only fill the tank every 10K miles. You may have to "top-off" your engine oil more often than that.

My 2012 Jetta TDI gets close to 50 mpg on the highway and only has a 14 gallon tank, but 50 mpg times 14 gal gives me a 700 mile range. I can't believe you couldn't find a place that sells diesel every 700 miles anywhere in this country given all the diesel tractor trucks that are out there.

One other thing to consider is safety. In many cases after an auto accident you end up with a fuel spill. Gas will ignite extremely rapidly....every try to ignite spilled diesel?

Until I see what you are doing it would be difficult to say why it is expensive.

I can have sex with my my sister but it doesn't mean I want to. I can find the stuff but I don't want to have one more thing hanging over my head. DEF is a must have and I can hear the wife already fretting because we are low on the stuff.

Not sure how often that would be an issue I must say.

It starts chiming at 1500 miles remaining. At 250 miles remaining it chimes every few minutes. At 0 miles remaining it won't restart.

like I said, one more "must do" thing in my life. As if life wasn't full enough of them.

Would the f**king thing notice a difference between AdBlue and a mixture of distilled water and "natural urea?"

Sounds like you have gotten to old/stubborn and can't accept change anymore.

It's time for you to get out of everybody else's way and let the rest of the world move on.

I am out of here!!!
