"Adolescence no longer ends when people hit 18, according to updated guidelines being given to child psychologists.
The new directive is designed to extend the age range that child psychologists can work with from 18 years old up to 25.

It is hoped the initiative will stop children being 'rushed' through their childhood and feeling pressured to achieve key milestones quickly, reports the BBC"

Psychology is BS as far as I am concerned. I don't believe a word they say. Sure, the data is gathered in some scientific way but the interpretation is pretty much up to the practitioner.

Yeah! We sure wouldn't want young people to start earning their own living now, would we?

Of course, more directly related to the psycho's motivation, is probably keeping them classified as children so they can continue to bill some govt agency or another for their services.

I do agree that young people aren’t generally allowed to be children very long, but are pushed into being little men and women from the time they are about 6 years old or so; and think the suggestion in the article is for the purposes of treatment, and not emancipation.

Hell, I know a woman who is 80+ and she still behaves like a two year old. Some people never seem to grow up.
I was a late bloomer, but that still does not mean that I was not capable of being responsible for myself at 18.

This isn't even a discussion of US law, but of changes in medical rules in the UK. I think there's some benefit from an overlap between adult and child psychologist ages, so there will be a continuity of treatment. A sudden change from one analyst to another may not be in the patient's interest.

For the child psychologist, absolutely. A little more time to bilk the stupid parents who believe in the crap. Wouldn't want them to miss that boat payment or upgrade boats.

Because Congress voted to blackmail states into raising it back to 21 after a bunch of (supposed) accidents involving drunken 18-year-olds. What they should have done is raise the unsupervised DRIVING age to 19 or 20.

Permit at 17, license for 125cc motorcycle at age 18, full driving permit at age 19 or 20. Typical Puritanical thinking.

There is no apparent rational reason for assigning the label "adult" at a fixed age of 18 years.

I think it really depends, within reason, on circumstances.

We all know about farmers' kids who were raised to start working when they were 12, we know about kids on the street who survive on their own at 13, and we know about others who never get it, no matter how old they are.

A lot of self-reliance is based on just that: knowing you have to rely on yourself, that maybe no one else cares as much about you, as you do.

So you must shift for yourself, because the entitlement fairy will not carry you from cradle to grave.

No one cares for you as you do. Nobody unless there is some self interest in it.

That is what people are trying to do. Get the entitlement fairy into their lives as much as possible.
