He did the right thing for that encounter. I do that same thing with sharks while diving and snorkeling. I do it because I am very familiar with sharks and I know when and when not to stand your ground- or even be in the environment with them. Remember less than blink of eye in human history we were right there in the wild - as just another a wild animal.

wow - that guy was lucky, a rhino is nearly blind but has a very strong sense of hearing. In the bush you never get close to a rhino no matter how much redbull you had or how many reps you did in the gym.

That thing tips over land cruisers and G wagens like toys with its horn.

I was surprised that the clap of hands scared him/her off. I'm guessing it was a sharp enough sound, and enough unlike normal sounds that it appeared threatening to the critter.That looked like an actual wild rhino to me. The way he started to charge one or twice then pulled up. Like he was trying to scare his adversary off. They are some fascinating creatures. Very agile considering their bulk and can run over 30 mph reportedly.

I can't find a youtube of it but some years back I saw footage of a Sumatran rhino and calf drinking from a marshy pond when the mama suddenly caught wind of the humans filming approx. 50 yards away in a pickup. She charged, the camera man on the bed yelling 'GO! GO! GO!', the truck accelerating just enough in time to avoid the rhino getting it though it was close with the mama just feet away for the last 10 seconds or so. She then veered off to the side with the prettiest trot you ever want to see. Just an amazing sight.

No trees within maybe a mile or more, I gather that people can easily get killed if they disturb a rhino on foot in that setting. On my bucket list is a tour somewhere in which visitors are taken on elephant-back to see rhinos in the wild. Supposedly can get much closer safely, w/o the rhino fleeing or attacking.

I lived for a decade in that region, Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and travelled a lot. Okavango safaris were the best.

I was along with my family in Victoria falls and stayed overnight in one of the lodges, I being the nutjob I am decided to take a stroll in the dark - so I did, the next day when I walked the same trail I was truly, genuinely scared of what could have happened. Big cats come out to relax and sleep at night besides the walkways in the bushes. Right where I had walked I saw 4 or 5 big impressions in the ground where they were (confirmed by local ranger).. I guess they were full and satisfied hence did not want a small snack like me.

in any case - when on a safari the first thing a mechanic/driver does is to remove fan fare horns from the trucks because it sounds like a rhino or elephant baby in pain. You dont want to know what the big chief of the elephants thinks of this, because he brings the posse with him. The guides or crazed south african bounty hunters will tell you never to get close to a rhino in his/her senses unless you have no reason to live in the next hour.

All of this is fascinating because the vehicle you are in has no roof or doors either. Makes you learn about respecting power a lot.
