Perhaps he thinks the bigger the game, the bigger his balls. One wonders if the holy grail for these guys would be rhino hunting. Sort of like eating the top of the line caviar even as the sturgeon are in decline.

As I understand it (and I could be wrong), the elephant population in some areas is greater than what is sustainable. Consequently, predators, including humans who pay a relatively large amount of money for a license, can reduce the population by some amount in order to maintain a sustainable herd. If it happened that the elephant in question was culled from a herd in an area of greater than sustainable population, and its meat was eaten (sharing with local villages is a common practice, or so I've heard), then I have no problem with this animal being taken.

IF that's true, then complaining about shooting the elephant is not unlike crying for the lovely white-tailed deer, majestic bison, or wily wolf in some areas.

Funny, there is real footage, I could link right now, of Syrians murdering a mother and father in front of a toddler girl.

I would count on he had a license, and also that it was very expensive. No different than elk tags here.

I'm not a advocate of the Syrian conflict. But there are horrific things in this world you should be outraged over. Not trying to bash the NRA. Just sayin

According to BBC, Botswana will be eliminating Elephant hunting in Jan 2014 because of dwindling numbers.
"Botswana will ban commercial hunting from January 2014 over growing concerns about the sharp decline in wildlife species, officials have announced."
BBC News - Botswana to ban hunting over wildlife species decline

Guy is a total dip$hit. Which is how I feel about any big money sport hunters, but especially so for Elephant hunters.
Paying a guide to bring you to the place and point out your shot is so incredibly lame and is in no way what I consider hunting.
I'm sure he got a huge boost to his tiny and frail manhood by shooting the elephant, but to me his actions are emasculating in the extreme.

Also, not a real good idea to do such a thing when you are a mouthpiece for the NRA. Hope they fire him... but that would actually require using some brain power to determine what is in the best interest of your PAC... not something we've seen out of the NRA of late.

Sorry Raff, but there are people who can multitask and be concerned about more than one issue at a time.

Actually, much different than elk tags wherever you are.
Elk are not in any way a threatened or vulnerable species.
Also, the tags don't cost $75K

Of course, if your intent is to throw any negative light off of the NRA, then I understand.

You've gotta love the ending of the story, which is generally the worst of it, the closing argument...the strongest argument they have. In it, their main argument is someone spending $50K of private money, while the government has budget cuts.

Nope...it doesn't move me in the least.

To be completely honest, I got through the first two sentences and stopped, googled and read a different source. I dislike getting either fringe as my initial source... taints the entire story.

Last I checked people were free to spend their money how they saw fit.
Very poor argument that does nothing to support their position.

Thats kind of how I feel about deer hunting. The guys around here feed the deer at the same time at the same spot every day and then one day they show up at that time and shoot it. Hardly a sport.

True. If you want to hunt deer and eat the results (not a bad thing, given the over-population and threat to public safety), at least be game enough to go out and find one to shoot, that's why it's called HUNTING. All these so called "sports" who think they are hunters b/c the sit in a tree stand over a feed spot where they have fed deer for a year are nothing but poser *******s....

I grew up hunting with my father and none of it involved baiting places to ensure wildlife show up. In fact, in Lousiana, it's against the law to bait a field for waterfowl. Can't imagne why it's not the same for deer. Bunch of pussies...

I don't have a problem with deer hunting for consumption (I don't hunt but I do fish and catch & release and have been instilling that practice in my boys), but baiting is a chicken$h!t thing to do.

Pretty sure it's against the law to bait and shoot deer in most states.

I have personally removed and destroyed quite a few tree stands which were over bait piles. Then I remove the bait pile and piss on the spot.
