a first in a lifetime for me....I have been "furloughed"

a first in a lifetime for me....I have been "furloughed". I have always had steady employment since my early teens, though high school, worked my way through college and have never been laid off before or had a lapse in employment. Hopefully it's relatively short term while our politicos duke it out. I am a DOD civilian employee.

Mixed emotions for me. I will ride it out, not a big deal financially, I have reserves and can find temporary work if needed with a few well placed phone calls.

Kind of good timing in a sense as my wife is recovering from a major surgery and I can now stay home with her and help with her recovery rather than having an in house hired care giver. I will still use the loving angel care giver as needed but its nice to be home with her.

I was out running an errand this morning and heard on the radio that the house had passed a bill that will give those furloughed their back pay when they return to work. If the senate will okay it, maybe it's time for you to either take a rest or do some of that temporary work to put a little extra money in the kitty.

Best of luck, whatever happens.

I feel your pain.

I do sub contract work for the feds and my check may be delayed. I'm tempted not to work, but am considered a "essential" by the DOJ.

I feel loved.

A family member is a retmil civ. contractor with what used to be called Joint Forces Command in Va Beach. He went to PACOM in Honolulu last Sat. for a six day trip. I wonder if he's stuck there.

If you're on official travel you get paid to return to your duty station.

I'm a reservist. My drill weekend has been postponed until they get the government going again. On the one hand, I could use the extra money. On the other, now I get a four day weekend before my civilian job kicks off the busy season.

If I understood correctly what I heard on the radio today, you will end up with retroactive pay if the senate will pass the bill that was passed by the house.

Good luck with it.

Same here - My unit could use the training time (even if we just do CBT's the whole time)

I was out of work for a couple years after having worked since I was 13. After becoming unemployed I started Jim's Auto Repair and stay pretty busy with it. Did go back to paper mill engineering when an opportunity came up at a paper mill about 17 miles away. I stay real busy with the shop nowadays too. My suggestion is to do what you want to do during this time.
