As far as we know, it was from birth. My parents got a clue to his color blindness when he began drawing dead (brown) Christmas trees as a child. He later built WWII models, including the German battleship Bismarck. Instead of painting a brown wooden deck, he painted a green one. Brown and green look the same to him.
