I need some new steel toe stuff, for years ive been going out and buying this below walmart product-

(I notice its listed as a hiking shoe now, but last year it was a work shoe)

Its cheap, but they don't last very long, the sole wears out really fast, and the water proof nature might as well not be there. I find steel toe work shoes way more usable than boots. (ankle and tendon injury in the past preventing laceup boots from being truly comfortable)

anyone have any recommendations they found to be good? Its time to invest in some work shoes or boots that will last more than 8 months to a year if I can find them.

I had a pair of Red Wings at my last job. They were composite toe, but met ANSI specs. As comfortable as bedroom slippers right out of the box. Not cheap, but not too bad. Mine were about $125, but the company covered $75 of that.

I have a pair of Cat steel toe sneakers. I find them very comfortable. I'm on my 2nd set.

Here is what the brahma shoes look like after less than 7 months- I can't say ive been using these things hard either.

Slipped this last weekend due to no treads left. Time to spend more money and see how something nicer holds up

That's about what my last Bhama's looked like about 8 years ago. Leather is thin and soles wear quickly.

Wearing Bates GX-8s now. Light but with good ankle support and the side zipper makes them easy to get on/off.

Working in different tool and die shops, I've grown to really appreciate the offerings of Red Wing. My last pair were used for 5 years before I medically retired...and there's still plenty of life left in them. These are slip on steel toed shoes, not boots. Due to a prior back injury, I decided to try them out...and LOVED them.

Expect to put out about $100-$125 for a decent pair from RW.

Stay away from any offering from Payless, Kmart, or Walmart...those don't last long, are uncomfortable to wear, and will do more harm to your legs and back they the protection they provide your toes.

Depending on your industry, you can get different soles that will hold up longer than those that wore out a few posts back. I stuck with oil and chip resistant soles, and never had issues with them. They even stood up to hydraulic fluid, which will eat up a normal sole.

I'm rockin a pair of Timberland Pros for the past 4 months of very heay wear. I have been very satisfied and they seem to be holding up great. Compay covered half and i paid like $70 i think.

I've worn good old Army Jungle Boots for years, before and after the service, which have a steel toe and steel sole (spike proof). My current beat up old pair have a huge dent where that metal saved my big toe. Very impressed. Not sure you can really buy the old style Jungle Boots any more. Then again, when I was in, we had to shine our boots. Now, they are rawhide looking material.

They look like Hush Puppies.


I'd recommend Walmart Supercenter or Academy Sports and Outdoors for value priced work shoes and boots.

Are Red Wings available factory direct or factory outlet priced, besides the very pricey retail stores? If so, get sized at a retail store, then buy 'em cheaper online if the retail store is unwilling to match the pricing available on the Internet. There must be a Red Wing discounter out there with better than retail pricing, I would think.

There's a military surplus store near here that will still occasionally get a number of them in, but they don't hang out on the shelves long...many guys buy them for use as hunting boots. The steel shank help them travel through the woods and across the rocks.

I run a pair of Georgia Boots brand. Comparable to Redwings. About 130. I have tried the Cats and Brahmas and they are cheap crap. Take care of your feet you will pay later if you dont.

Red Wing are issue boots for Richmond Ambulance Authority. They wear like iron, comfortable and are unconditionally guaranteed forever for workmanship (stitching, eyelets, etc.). They can be resoled by Red Wing for $42.
