GM equivalent to the Ford Panther platform?

Curious, did GM produce any platform similar to the Crown Vic? If so are they really comparable?

Too bad this is in Henderson, NV, no way I can get up there anytime soon.

Yes, the Caprice made till 1996 and its Buick and Caddy equivalents. Probably a better platform and drivetrain (at least after the early 90s) than the Clown Vic.

I would hone in on that Caprice platform with the Chevy 350. I think that 1993-up Fleetwoods and 1994-96 Roadmasters had the 350 as standard and 1994-96 Caprices had the 350 as an option.

Just what I was going to say. A Buick Roadmaster 350 with towing package (5000# capacity) is on my list of cars to own someday.

I had a Caprice wagon with the tow package, before someone stole it, cops found it, but it disappeared from the tow yard and ended up exported to the Middle East with 100k miles less on the odo (car had 190k miles when stolen) per CarFax.

True story. It handled and drove surprisingly well for a barge that size and got about 27 mpg highway.

I had an unlimited CarFax when I was looking for a car a couple years later and I decided to run the VIN of the Caprice out of curiosity. CarFax report showed it as exported to a M.E. country with 90k on the clock.

Yup, the LT1 350 is a good engine. I was semi-looking for a Fleetwood Brougham or Roadmaster Estate a couple years ago and they were almost always advertised on CL with the "Corvette Engine!!!!!"

Not quite dudes, but certainly adequate power. I did look at a couple 305 Caprice wagons but they were lacking. Definitely go with the 5.7L.

The US gets the same platform as the cop-only Caprice. Though most depts seem to still use the FWD Impala or the Taurus-based police car around here. The Caprice is being released for non-police use as the Chevy SS (how appropriate for a former police car ) next year. Plus Caprices will end up showing up on auction eventually as well.

I'm actually starting to consider one of these GM cars now that I'm managing to scrape a few bucks together. I'd like a wagon but would settle for a sedan if price and condition were right. Is the 5,7 the Vortec that was used in trucks from 96 on? Or just a regular SBC, ie without the Vortec head gasket problems?

I've seen a lot of reports of the LT1 being a problem engine. Something to do with the ignition system being trouble prone. Anyone able to clarify this? Other than that these seem to be quite decent cars.

- Peter.
