Adam & Steve in Monmouth Can Get Hitched
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/19/nyregion/same-sex-marriages-in-new-jersey-can-begin-court-rules.html?_r=0
“The state has advanced a number of arguments, but none of them overcome this reality: same-sex couples who cannot marry are not treated equally under the law today,” Chief Justice Stuart Rabner wrote in his opinion. “The harm to them is real, not abstract or speculative Last edited by MTI; 10-18-2013 at 10:27 PM. |

Honestly, I don't have a dog in this fight since I'm not gay and don't live in NJ anymore.
But personally, I'd be cool with getting states out of the marriage business. The thing done in front of a justice of the peace should be called a "Civil Union" for all unions. Man/man, man/woman, woman/woman, stallion/mare. Doesn't matter. Civil unions should have all the rights and responsibilities of present-day marriages. "Marriage" should be reserved as a colloquial term and for religious ceremonies. That ought to satisfy the Jeebus-jumpers while preserving everyone's rights. I'm not sure if this decision wasn't a semantic question anyway at this point, since civil unions were previously held to have the same rights as "marriages" by the NJ courts. And Christie had no plans to block further civil unions. |

you think the states would be happy with more marriage, People spend money to get hitched, Taxes on all of that. biz benefits, more income. if things turn out badly. Divorce lawer gets work, and they get taxed on that... it's a whole untapped resource. Plus, this world could use more love

Assuming the SCOTUS stays the way it is, I think it is a safe assumption that all restrictions on same sex marriage will fall when the next case comes before the court.
I have yet to hear a legal argument that shows a valid state interest in preventing such unions. It tends to take some time in this country, but bigotry seems to always lose in the end and we end up doing the right thing. Just takes time (which sucks for those affected) but there is the hope/knowledge that it seems to always work out in the end.
