"You gonna fish or are you gonna talk?"
The use of explosive or electric devices for fishing is illegal, but there have been reported cases of such methods in Louisiana, said an official with the state Department of Wildlife and Fisheries.
“I wouldn’t say it happens all the time. It could have been a legitimate excuse,” department public information officer Gabe Griffin said Friday. The method is used to send shock waves through water either “shocking” or killing multiple fish at once, which are then collected as their bodies float to the water’s surface. http://www.theadvertiser.com/article/20131018/NEWS01/310180031?source=nletter-top5 |

"Lafayette Parish" ~ Probably friends of TW's !!
Dont know what all the fuss is about. As a kid we used to make carbide bombs for fishing. Later we found 1/4 of a stick of jelly worked better. The fish all float up to the surface with blood shot eyes.

Your bragging about such fishing techniques is reprehensible. Any chance that you've recently visited Goblin Valley, Utah??

When I worked on the seismograph boat way back when it had a sparker powered by a 671 diesel generator. Dem coonasses said don't bother wearing no life jacket cause if you fall over de sparks is gonna kill you anyway. Looked like underwater lightning. Run that boat near a diver flag and it legally was murder. Bet that boat was a fish killa too.
Jellyfish glow in the dark. Wonder if it is a defense mechanism? I always thought it was the opposite like bright colors on a male bird. Maybe it is both and more. |

It's a derogatory term referring to Acadiens in Louisiana. There are a lot of myths surrounding the etymology but as far as I know, nothing certain. It was made officially an insult in law by Gov Edwards, who should know.

I worked with the Cajuns and the Coonasses. My understanding was that it was only derogatory if you confused the two. That was years ago. Things have changed.
We also had the cook keep a chum bucket when we were going to backup to a platform. Many a fine dinner was had by chumming the water and starting a feeding frenzy. Probably not PC or even legal. |

During my time living in south Louisiana about 30 years ago, "coonass" was not a derogatory term. When I first heard it after moving there from the NE US, I was shocked, only to find that it was commonly used (not as a bad thing or epithet), and had some self pride associated with the word if you were a local.
I wonder if things have changed. PS, where I live now, the Department of Natural Resources shocks fish - non fatally - with a rig they have on their Whaler type outboards to take population surveys and to catch a few fish for various tests. Rgds, Chris W.

Ran a couple searches and it looks like the terms have been hijacked by tourism marketing and no longer have any meaning.
Best I remember you were born Cajun and chose to be a Coonass. Coonass was a way of life, now it is something to print on a t-shirt. |
