dont give these to people. Nearly impossible to redeem. I have a 50 dollar gift card from a distant aunt who loves to give people in my family amex gift cards. They never work, every time anyone tries to redeem them, they get denied. What she's doing is giving amex money instead since everyone in the family gives up and the cards expire.

for the last 2 hours ive been trying to redeem it to partially buy some tires online. declined 6 times now, yet card is good says amex. every decline is some new wrinkle in spelling of the name, location of periods, extra space, who knows. These are their theories, they cannot specifically tell me why its declining every time, just the name is wrong somehow, and the longer I stay on the phone, the more convinced I become that its to make people fed up and just forget about using the card.
The tirerack people are getting annoyed, they keep reviewing what was put in, and its right every time.

Dealing with the amex gift card call center is up there on the annoying call list for me now.

If you want to give someone 50 bucks, give them 2 20s and a 10 in cash. Gift cards are a good gift, but the way amex does it makes it very difficult to use easily. Get them a VISA gift card instead if it has to be a gift card. Never had a problem with one of those.
