Let's talk about black liquor and the tax break a minute
black liquor
Read about the tax break. When this law was rolled out paper mills were burning all the black liquor they could get their hands on. The recovery boilers were set up to burn petroleum products only in large quantities and had to make modifications to add equipment to burn miniscule amounts in relation to the black liquor. We added a small pump and diesel fuel line to pump diesel fuel into the black liquor fuel stream just to take advantage of the tax break. I remember seeing a copy of a check that was more than $6,000,000. The paper mills thoroughly enjoyed this when they got those multimillion dollar checks back.

Interesting link, eng. I knew the word but not what it was. There was a paper mill near Joyce, LA that once discharged black liquor directly into Dugdemona Bayou, killing everything in the bayou for a mile or so. Kept it dead for 10-20 years, IIRC. Finally the EPA had firm discussion with them and they quit discharging the waste directly.

Not sure if it still smells like that Clk but the smell is the gasses that get vented from the batch digester that is steam cooking the chips and white liquor. Think of it as a paper mill "fart" in Ky terms. Nowadays most virgin kraft mills capture those gases and burn them in either the boiler or the lime kiln.
White liquor is black liquor that has been processed for re-use.
