Lets talk beer for a moment shal we?

OK, I knew that would get some of your attention!

So, I'm not a beer drinker AT ALL and I know nothing of the brands. I don't even pay attention when my friends order, to what brand it is.

My question is:

If you were bringing beer to share at a party or corporate "happy hour", what would you bring?

Nothing too exotic but think of something that everyone would say "OH Yeah!" to when you opened the cooler. I don't mind it being a little more expensive since I don't do this often.

Thanks

Beer tastes seem so regional in nature. What flies in NC may be greeted by the pinched nose of distaste in NY. Ask a couple of local friends.

Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is always a good choice but its regional.

Around here Two Roads is taking off and very popular.

Right now I'd go for an Oktoberfest. Its seasonal so it says you know something about beer (or something like that) and they're generally pretty tasty and drinkable. Nearing the end of the season for that, but maybe a pumpkin beer or if its in the dead of winter, a stout or porter.

Since you're not a beer drinker, I would bring what you like to drink, "to share." Is it a "beer party" where you were asked to bring beer?? Ha!

Beer is a highly personal choice. While many people enjoy the mass marketed, mass brewed offerings of Coors, Budweiser et al. People who really enjoy beer for the taste ( not merely the buzz) will have strong opinions. I love hoppy beers--beers that are strong and bitter. My current favorite is "Hop Devel" from Victory brewing in Downingtown, PA. Not everyone likes such a beer.
Any Oktoberfest seasonal brews would be appreciated by some fraction at your party.
Don't forget "Celebration" will be coming out soon. As my beer-connoisseur friends say--If they were forced to have only one style of beer, "Celebration" would be it. Its by Sierra Nevada. I have never had a "bad" Sierra Nevada brew regardless of the style. I like some better than others, but there isn't a bad one in the lot.
Don't take criticism of your beer personally. Let those who will enjoy what you bring, and let the others drink something else.

I'm not being asked to bring anything to this soiree, I just thought I would be nice and bring something a lot of people would enjoy.

Good idea to ask some locals too.

Is Octoberfest the Samuel Adams variety?

You won't offend anyone with Heineken- won't impress anyone either. It's safe.

Many larger retailers, even Costco, have variety packs. Often 24 bottles, 4 "flavors", six of each. Maybe a Sam Adams sampler, a holiday sampler, and a Mexican beer sampler (not sure if those are everywhere or just regional)?

As for your Oktoberfest question, while Sam Adams does have an Oktoberfest, so do many other brewers. To compare to the worlds of wine or soda, saying Oktoberfest is like saying merlot, or cherry cola. Many wineries have merlots, but they're not all the same. Many soda bottlers have a cheery cola, but they too vary. If you can't find any sampler packs, you can just grab some six packs of different varieties. And there's nothing wrong with including some standard American beers, many people do like them.
