coyotes just "hanging out"?
 

I can't say I've ever seen one just come in the yard and sit around. Anytime I see em they are moving along. There goes all the little animals in the neighborhood.

Thats when they're most active.

If a Coyote is out during the day and isn't hiding it's probably sick or rabid.

They're like flies around here. Hearing them howl in the early evening in the adjoining woods pretty much confirms it. Hanging around subdivision alleys and yards in broad daylight is somewhat common around here too. I would have to go 'Oswald' on 'em, were they that close during daylight hours.

Coyotes appear during the day all the time, although it's true they're more active at night. They aren't strictly nocturnal. I've killed quite a few and the majority were daytime kills.

Discharging a firearm in that neighborhood might present a problem, but pop that sucker with a Red Ryder BB gun and he'll probably decide to find another place to hang out.

If it's coyote or my cat the decision is really, really easy

wow people! whats with the coyote animosity? they are just wild dogs. they are not agressive toward people, they are just looking for food to survive. as for your cats...ive lost more cats to great horned owls than anything else. thats the risk you run when letting your cats outside, and honestly, its probably much less painfull for them to go via coyote or owl than getting squashed by a car :(

I can't stop people from driving on the road near my house, but I can stop predators from eating my pets. I leave the coyotes alone that live in the back woods-they don't come up near the barn so they're safe.

Agreed. If you're a responsible pet owner your animals would be inside in the first place and the coyote threat would be non-existent. Seems like people have no respect for nature. The mentality seems to be 'if it's in our (man kind in general) demolish it or kill it. Very short sighted in my opinion.

Don't they have loitering laws where you live? ;)

That is one of the healthiest looking coyotes I have ever seen. Around here they are pretty skinny looking, seen during the day, and high tail it when they hear or see a human. Three outside only cats for the last three years, so they must been keen on avoiding being taken by one.

The hybred coyotes or whatever they are called up here in eastern Canada have attacked people. One or two people where killed in the events.

The coyotes have a special name here and are much larger than the common coyote. I wil never forget the first one I saw in the wild up close at maybe 100 yards. Then a string of them hung up after being killed. Some where very large and a good sized dog like a german sheppard could not cope with the larger ones from what I observed.

And the next sentence was probably something along the line of,"And where nobody could hear the gun shot"
