New York vs Chicago Pizza

This was one of the best "rants" over the long simmering debate I've seen in a long time.

Watch Jon Stewart's Epic Rant Against Chicago Pizza - Video Interlude - Eater National

"This is not pizza," Stewart rants. "This is tomato soup in a bread bowl. This is an above ground marinara swimming pool for rats."

Chicago hot dogs . . . sorry, but if I wanted a salad with my "meat in tube form", I would have asked for it. ;)

But, a Sonoran . . . another story.

Finally watched it.

NYC Pizza is . . . magic

sloride 11-21-2013 06:23 PM

Deep dish pizza is not typical Chicago pizza. That is what is sold downtown for thirty dollars. Real chicago pizza is thin crust, "crispy and flaky" cut into small squares leaving some tiny pieces along the edges with cheese, sausage, and onions and maybe green peppers, mushrooms.

I've had "real chicago deep dish" right in Chicago, and it was the most disgusting "pizza" I've ever had. 100% agree with John Stewart's rant. :D Its a slimy bowl of tomato sauce. Who wants that?!

That is not Chicago Pizza. Only the thirty dollar downtown pizza.

hands down the best pizza i have ever had is at oreganos. they do chicago style pizza. the stuffed pizza is unbelievable. damn i know whats for dinner tomorrow

MTI 11-21-2013 11:41 PM

Oreganos . . . The definition of "red stain on a cracker" as pizza. That's not a crust, that's a matzo.

I am always puzzled that nobody can seem to pin down what the term Chicago Pizza means.

Does it mean deep dish?

Does it mean stuffed pizza?

Above, sloride describes a version of "Chicago Pizza" which sounds like what they serve in Minneapolis.

I have never been to Chicago, but there is a place in Oakland, CA called Zachary's which serves what they claim to be Chicago pizza. It has a thin crunchy lower crust, then the put in a lot of cheese, then they put a super thin additional layer of dough (which kind of disappears into the cheese), and then the do "toppings", and then they do sauce. The sauce is a little runny on top.

So is that downtown chicago tourist pizza that I am describing, or is it real honest chicago-style pizza?

I did like that last night on Jon Stewart they pretty much all agreed that CA pizza is the worst. haha!

Shortsguy1 11-22-2013 01:00 AM

Oh, and a slightly odd thing is that even though I lived in Manhattan for college, I rarely ate the version of pizza that Stewart enjoys. For whatever reason, I almost always ordered what they call a Sicilian slice. It is a little bit like pizza on top of focaccia.

And Staten Island, NY (part of NYC) has its own unique take on NY Pizza. The nicer pizza places on SI do not do the oversize floppy slice that Stewart is always folding in half. SI pizza is probably the version of NY pizza that I miss the most.

Pizza's like p****.

When it's good, it's really good, and when it's bad, it's still pretty good.

I saw Stewart kiss and make up with Chicago on last night's show. Good stuff.

I like both. There was an Uno's Pizza (Chicago style) in SF - I ate there a few times in the late 90s, I guess they're out of business now. Not sure why. Oh well, their pizza was first rate. Other pizza you often leave the last bit of crust and move on to the next piece. Not Uno's. The crust was good.

If I were to have one with the sort of tomato sauce overload that Stewart was hinting at, might be unpleasant.
