Storm near miss

We had a storm system move through about an hour and a half ago here. It was so bad I actually went to the basement for the first time. Power went off twice or so but came right back on.

No damage here at the house but at my building downtown I got a call from a tenant saying a pipe had burst. I went down and found a lot of water dripping in. I determined something was happening on the roof. I went up there and found the main roof drain clogged with misc debris. I waded out to it and started pulling junk off it and it began sucking like crazy. Its an 8" pipe feeding a ten inch roof drain and 8" of water can cause a serious head pressure.

Considering that I have quite a few skylights and such this was about the best thing it could have been.

It cooled off after the storm went through and now is sunny and pretty breezy.

I was closely watching radar. Some pretty strong straight-line winds. No doubt several small tornados, at least. Lake Michigan built up some pretty big waves too.

I am sure it will take a while to tally all the damage through the area. And the system is far from spent.

Many of the new homes built in Oklahoma are built with safe rooms that can withstand 250 mph wind. These are above ground structures that also serve as a storage area when not being used for shelter.

The advantage of an above ground room is that it is rare that a tree will fall on it and block the door, and all to common danger of underground shelters.

An above ground room will also not fill with water. Some area of Oklahoma have a water table of less than ten feet so it is necessary to keep a sump pump running at all times in the storm cellar.

Just something to consider when buying or remodeling a home.

Shipping container and a bulldozer should get you something pretty strong.

my concern with something above ground would be 250mph winds sending a telephone pole through the structure

I was in Kokomo, IN yesterday. I was at the north end of Kokomo while a tornado went through the south end. When I left to head back home I had to change up my route a little as many roads were closed due to down trees. There was stuff strewn everywhere east of Kokomo. The drive home going north on I69 was a b*itch. I had my K1500 Silverado which has a high top cap on it. The cross winds were very strong which made keeping in on the road a challenge.

I am told a funnel cloud was spotted near my home, but thankfully it missed us. Several buildings were heavily damaged near here.

My #2 lovely daughter came by just now with her oldest child. Her school was damaged enough that it is closed until repairs are made. I know from pictures in the paper that part of the roof and some walls were blown off. I imagine by tomorrow they'll know more about how long it will take to repair.

My parents live in Springfield, so I checked up on them. Was told they got high winds for an hour or so then sunshine.

Googled the damaged areas and they were about 75 miles north of the chaos. My prayers go out to all of those folks who went through that!

Glad you weathered it okay...so many people didn't. Mother nature can be a real...well, rhymes with "witch."

My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire region...and to the Philippines, too, what a horrific storm that was.
