Have you ever had to rent a car because

all your old MB's were broken? I was close to that situation this week.

Its always good to keep one boringly reliable vehicle around when one has a lot of old stuff...like a late model corolla or a pickup truck.;)

X2 on the late-model Corolla :).

I have my old MBs worked on at the dealership, where they loan me a car...

Sometimes the cost of being, uh, thrifty, can exceed the value of being, uh thrifty. ;)

Yes.

I just rented a car two weeks ago to make the 6 hr drive to Shelbyville, KY for my brother-in-law's Grand Master reception. Of course, it was a 6 hr drive the next day to come home.

The 87 Champagne needs that belt tensioner work done. I think that's my Thanksgiving plans.

And the 2000 4BT Dakota is just a bit too much of a truck to drive there and back. Maybe, I'm just getting to the point where I really want to be comfortable if driving for 6 hours????

i thought about that but do the math though.....insurance, maintenance, tags and it adds up....i would love to have a pickup truck but the math does not work.

That can come in handy. A couple of years ago, I had a C350 sport for a week....and a month a later a new E-class for two weeks. Then two days later the ignition switch broke. No loaner that time...a two week repair fiasco. I got by riding the Harley.;)

Yes this summer - I had to cough up 10 days of rental for a trip to England 'cos I buggered up the camshaft on my newly bought W201...

...still kicking myself...

...still fixing it (along with everything else on the car of course)

When I first got back from Iraq, I was staying in the Motel 6 because I hadn't found an apartment yet, my 300D was in Georgia. My tools were in storage, and the starter on my 240D died. I had to rent a Nissan Altima for a few days.

There have been 3-4 times over the years where my old mb was down for maintenace, and I didn't want to make the drive in my work van to some location, so rented a car instead.
Honestly though, it usually reinforces my love affair with my old smoky rusticles though. I get a taste of a new car, speed far too much, am not impressed by much else, and return with open arms

Last winter, the van was out of service, the SD was out of service, the SDL has never been in service and the SE was the daily driver. If it failed, I'd have to resort to driving the 740iL as the daily driver.

Oh the horror...............

I guess I am a repair ninja. I went over 8 years with my 300SD as my only car, never had to use another car other than my wife's 300E maybe once or twice...I have done full transmission swaps in 1.5 days.....and I replaced a sway bar on that car in ONE evening....the whole bar...I work fast under time crunches  :D

Now that I have 4 cars and one of them is new its not a concern. Currently all the MB's work but the 190 needs a flex plate or flywheel....but still drives...tearing it apart soon. My 420SEL has never broken down in 2.5 years....and my SD has never broken down in 10.5 years. Its all about excessive maintenance. :D
