Worst Mercedes ever????

G'day Folks,

I went to the dealer today to buy some parts and I nearly got knocked off my bike by some old pedantic pillock in a new A class.

Whilst I had words with said pillock - I took an even stronger disliking to the car - it looks like a Ford Focus. No style despite the good Honest John review

Mercedes-Benz A-Class 2012 - Car Review | Honest John

Has anyone here driven one yet?

Not sold in the US at this time. US dealers objected to having a "value priced" hatch in their uber classy showrooms. The latest word is that an all-electric B-Class will be sold in the US in 2015. Meanwhile the new CLA is selling very well, the AMG version in December and the GLA will be released in Europe in March 2015.

Oh that's why I haven't heard about it here - not sold - not really relevant. Well to those that say "oh we never get the good European stuff" => you're lucky you don't get the dross too!

Aside from the bulbous, organic, reptilian styling (which I hate), the current trend towards hiked-up sills and squashed-down roofs severely limits interior room and outward visibility. Cars can be sleek without looking like muscular lizards!

You have side airbags to thank for that. I'm waiting for roof and floor mount airbags.

When the rear sill is way higher than the front (e.g. Toyota Matrix), I have the stylists to thank for that.

My father got the new "A" class, it doesn't look half bad in black. Much better built than any Volkswagen, around 35-40MPG out of the 2-liter, rides a little firm but it handles bumps well. Very reasonably priced.

Interior looks extremely futuristic; seats are comfortable but I still can't get over the design of the rear windows —from the inside, looks like you are sitting in an armored truck.

Expecting the build quality of pre-1995 Mercedes is silly, those will never return the way the market is formulated and the competition at hand. For the needs of the average European, it suits the bill just fine: sporty, comfortable, unexpectedly spacious, easy to park, right gear ratios. Good compromise.

What I said about outward visibility. Today, back-up sensors and rear-view cameras are almost mandatory, as the stylists have made it difficult to see out the back, and impossible to see the rear corners of the vehicle.
Decades ago, cyclists had to worry about being impaled on huge tail-fins. Today they have to worry about being invisible to automobile drivers. At least with the fins, a driver could see the rear corners!

Happy Motoring, Mark
