N***** playin ball

It appears that the N-word has found a new home- on the game field. Now some people can use it in music- but not others. Some can use it in films- but not others. Some can use it on the street -but not others. Some can use it and others will get arrested when they say it. The only difference between the groups is skin color. Discrimination due to race? Nah, not in this PC world.

What do you think? Should the N word be allowed on the field by some and not others and the difference between who can and who cannot being race?

Poor boy. Wouldn't it be great if we all could use that word?

some would say that it takes away the "power" associated with it. Wish the folks at Hallmark would have gotten the memo.

I think much of the "power" is removed as it is. Fifty years ago this was the ultimate insult as it referred to nothing but negative about a person. When anyone was called by such a term it implied they had nothing to offer and were among the most useless of people. If you were a member of this group you knew this was nonsense, and you could not help but be insulted by the constant reminder that at one time you and yours were considered 3/5ths of a population and not to be counted as a whole.

I think much of this memory has faded, hence the renewed used of the term among younger people.

But that is just my ignorant opinion. It would be interesting to see what insights others here might have, and I will be the first to admit that as a White skinned person I am on the outside looking in on this subject.

Having seen variations of that Paula Deen meme . . . conservatives don't seen to get it that Paula wasn't making a movie or writing a script . . . she was actually living it in real life. So, no tears for Ms. Deen, although Tracy Morgan sends his support:

I think people were way too hard on her. She’s a 65 year-old white woman from the South, I wouldn’t trust her if she didn’t use the N-word, You can’t be so hard on her!”

Well before Tarrantino . . . remember Lavar Burton as Kunta Kinte, aka "Toby" and the lines he had to deliver. One wonders if "Roots" could ever be made, let alone replayed, on ABC.

Yer obsessed. There are things that white dudes say to each other that would not sound right coming from a black dude. There are dividing lines between us, no getting around it.

Who is "yer"? lol.

Is "sounding right" (or not) grounds for being arrested?

Who put those lines there? Do you not control your mind? Who does control the populations minds? The man behind the curtain? lol.

How does this jibe with the post below it which asks if words change meaning over time?

So words can change meaning over time? Do we still get to have some words mean two different things based on skin color alone when viewed by observers- and then the observer's skin color comes into play as well?

Like I said, yer obsessed. I said nothing about being arrested. If a white guy uses the N word to a black dude, doesn't SOUND RIGHT. If a black guy calls a white guy "inbred hillbilly white trash," doesn't SOUND RIGHT. One of these days you'll get these things.

One of these days you come to understand that people are people- and skin color has little to do with what's inside. It does not sound right TO YOU. In your mind it sounds wrong. So who is forcing you to think these thoughts?

I lived in a place where the majority of people were brown and black- and the N word was used by many; black, brown, white, yellow. It was a term of endearment. "You my n*****". No one cared about the skin color of the person using it because people there did not base opinions on skin color. As Idle said it's meaning has changed.
You may call me a dreamer, but some day....

As an aside, I didn't follow the Paula Deen thing, but Tracy Morgan's comment rings true to me.

The whole issue looks overblown to me.

The 'N' word is to ghetto blacks, as the confederate flag is to white trash.
