Back in the day, had a 400 triple (S3A) and a 750 triple H2C, man wish I would have those now, either one of them really!
Never heard of certain circles replacing the belt with a chain, that's a new one. Making a bike that way, but not changing to a chain, hmmm.
PanZZer, I disagree on no "treatment" for tinnitus, no cure, but Ihave heard of different treatments on commercials (have never tried), but I do find that playing music (any soft music) does help the symptoms well enough to help me fall asleep.

I rode the same

Shovelhead for 24 years. About 10 years into it I converted the primary drive to an enclosed belt. It eliminated most of the noise and vibration from the drive train. It also got and gave up rpm faster, less flywheel effect. It never needed adjustment.

The old style secondary chain only lasted about 6 to 7k miles, got the rear wheel and the back of my babe's tee shirt filthy. Later in my ownership, I started using O-ring chain for the secondary drive. After initial readjustment, that chain lasted 20k miles + and was on the bike when I sold it. O-ring chain eliminated periodic chain lube and the ugly mess besides as well as minimizing adjustments. It only needed a wipedown with a product called "Chain Wax" for cleaning and looking good.

BTW, I sold that bike about 10 years ago to the local Fire Chief's son and it is still in almost daily use here in town.

Harleys are great. You only need one a lifetime.

(Despite their "helmets" being the "novelty caps" (as the State Troopers call them) of the "beanie helmets" with fake DOT stickers on them.)

Though of course it is true that most motorists probably would not want to argue the "right-of-way" with 30 thundering Hogs coming at them.
Funny, HD complied and it wasn't loud pipes that were the problem.....

of course you can source your claim.

Yes it is easy.

Look at ANY HD on the road, and then look at the rider's head.

Let me know the first time you ever see a full face helmet on it.

Have you ever heard of "ABATE"?

Well you've overlooked something called the Noise Control Act of 1972, modified in 78.

Harley made their factory exhaust systems comply but then found their bikes still exceeded federal limits. Found all sorts of noise sources like the engine and drive train. Hence mods to the valve and drive train.

And then the first thing a new Harley owner does is get rid of the stock exhaust. They aren't the only ones. Lots of sport bike guys do exhaust mods. I have a Scorpion slip-on mounted on my Kawasaki. The stock exhaust on those sounds like poo.

I've got Hooker w/adjustable baffles on my Dresser and baloney cuts on my FXRS.

A lot of the noise issues I've seen are the ones that go straight pipes or remove the baffles.

Apparently the Sportster is the one to get if you're going to get a Harley. It's too early to tell about the new Street 750, but I find that one interesting.

My first HD was a 91 Sporty 1200. It'd vibrate the fillings out of your teeth, but it was sure fun to ride. Don't forget 1200cc = 74ci. Which for decades was the mill that lugged fat-azzed couples around the country on Electraglides.
The old peanut tank with no gauge could be problem on long trips, like to Canada. But after 90 miles it was time to stretch your legs anyway.

Soon after I traded it in for the '97 Dyna, feeling all puffy for now riding a "real Harley, a guy in a car at a gas station asked me " Hey, is that was a Sportster.

Some years ago (03-04), I test rode a new model Sportster and was quite impressed with the improvements.

A late model, low mile EVO is probably all most riders need for comfort, reliability, and ease of repair.

Another thing the author forgot to mention is what a lady friend told me a long time ago: "You don't get laid on a Honda". True dat.

Ride Free. Ride Far. Ride Safe.
