Poll: note on window offering to buy a car
Have you ever left a note on someone's window, offering to buy their car? For the record, this is time #5 or #6 that I've had a note stuck to my car offering to buy.

Once, onto a dark blue W123 300TD that looked like an $800 car. Never heard back.
What car did you leave a note on?

I have done it many times. Once that i remember resulted in a sale. It was about fifteen years ago, an 81 240D and a month or so later they called me and I bought it for about 2500 IRRC. One of my kids got too close to a pole when they were a litttle too drunk to be driving and I believe i eventually parted it out.....no thats not what happened. That one was rear ended heavily and I bought it back.....then I had it pulled out but not made perfect just servicable and we kept driving it. I think I eventually pulled the motor and put it in something else.....not positive. Too many years, too many kids and too many 240D's to be sure....
Yeah, it all happened to that car. It was China blue.

I have before, never heard anything back though. If I had I would have offered a fair price, but as long as I don't see the car in pick and pull later I am not bothered at all to never hear anything back. No one has, but I would pretty much have the same reaction of someone left a note on my car. If I wanted to sell it name a price, if not just ignore it.

Never left a note, but got caught admiring an old Willy's by the owner...
Told him I'd buy it if he ever decided to sell. Guy (Al) looked me up 2 years later (fairly remarkable task, as I was living in a remote cabin) and told me he was ready to sell. Didn't haggle his price at all, and became the proud owner of my first Willy's.

I've picked up a couple cars that way, all were obviously given up on by previous owners. Best one was an 81 Corrolla SR5 hardtop that I ended up getting for $50. New strut bearings, tires, and water pump, drove it for three weeks while fixing my pickup, then sold for $500. Not a bad deal. Afterwards I found out how rather rare those cars were.

I've never left one, but if I like the car and can associate the car with the owner, I've chattted up the owner on occasion.
On the other hand, my wife's 68 MGB gets them almost everytime she parks the car. My daughters refer to them as "Love notes". We never respond, as Linda has zero interest in selling her car. Jim

I've had three notes so far left on my Toyota pickup, all appeared to be written by semi-literate teenagers, "hey hit me up I wan 2 by yur yota". That sort of stuff.
I've left notes on several cherry old Subarus and one pristine 240D that I see an old lady driving around here and there. Never got a hit though.

My only experience with windshield notes-50 years ago. Several of us witnessed a parking lot accident, a mere fender-bender. The offender hit an unoccupied vehicle. He got out, saw that there was some damage, and that there were witnesses. He wrote a note, and placed it on the windshield, and left to find another parking space. We all wandered over to read the note," I just hit hit your car, The people standing across the street think I am leaving you my license number and phone. I am not."
One of our group then added, " I witnessed Bozo hit your car, Here is his tag number. You can call me at ______"

Every time I go to town I find at least one reason to leave a "thanks for parking like a dlck" note, but never do. Regrets.....

There was a 53 Studebaker sitting behind a commercial building owned by a fellow here forever. One day I started talking to him about it and after a few years he decided to sell it to me. I never did much with it as I discovered mildew in the interior. I sold it to a fireman who was going to build it up to run at Bonneville but never did. He sold it to a Studebaker buddy of mine's son who still is driving it as an unrestored vehicle. He drives it daily in warm weather.
I have another fellow locally who has an old Pagoda roof SL trapped in his garage by "stuff". It is supposedly stored in a good way. It was his wife's car and she recently died so he is not ready to sell it yet, though he says he is just too busy to uncover it and won't let me do it for him. He's about 80 so I am not sure what happens if he dies before getting around to it He has a son but the son is not very friendly.

I had a dilemma with this last night, some SOB parked so as to slighty obscure my driveway with his/her jeep. Making it difficult to back in. It was definitely note worthy, but not tow truck worthy. However with the rain, a note telling the person to stop parking stupidly might have lost its potency. I wrote it all out, then decided to let it go. Returning to the OP, ive left a few notes, never responses, had a few on an old buick I had though. Including one extremely shady 2am road trip encounter with a guy in a gas station who wanted to buy the car off me right then for a wad of cash he had in hand. He was really persistent, was glad to GTFO of there before it got too awkward. I have had a few people call me out of the blue knowing my interest in this or that and wondering if I wanted a free such and such. Grabbed a 74 karmann Ghia like that (of course a tree had fallen on it, but it had been fully restored right before, and no glass was broken)
