test drive
ive got my diesel truck up for sale. so far i have had alot of tire kickers.
i had one guy come by on friday that seemed pretty serious. i let him test drive it, and it being a 6 speed in a 4 door long bed, he really couldnt drive it for ****. that got me thinking, would you be offended if you showed up to look at a car and the owner said he will take you for a drive? as in he is gonna be the one behind the wheel. the truck is really simple to drive once you get the hang of it, but being that it has a true truck transmission in it, it makes all kinds of funny noises if you try to drive it like your civic.

I actually prefer to be a passenger for the first drive in an unfamiliar vehicle: I can watch & listen, learn the local route etc. What are you selling?

I've never had a seller make that proposal. I think I would be amenable.
It's considerably easier and more common for lack of skill to damage a bike than a car. Consequently in motorcycle sales, ads will often include something to the effect of "test ride only with money in hand and MC license". I've managed to test ride three bikes without meeting the "money in hand" part, and ended up buying two of those. In one case, it was a pawn shop with a Buell that seemed to be getting disillusioned with that particular piece of merchandise. The next time I told the seller approximately how much money I had in the bank at the time and only rode the bike around a parking lot. The third time I just informed the seller that I was looking to replace my previous bike and I got offered a test ride. I showed up in Navy PT gear. Seller was a Navy brat. Having full gear (full face helmet, MC jacket, gloves, and boots) in the trunk probably helped. Showing up in a Benz probably didn't hurt either, and neither did the fact that the bike had already been down more times than Linda Lovelace and was priced to move.

the guy that came out and drove it friday was struggling pretty bad. i reassured him that its a piece of cake once you get used to it. he managed to get it down the road, got it back to my house and made an offer that i accepted. told me he was gonna go home and talk it over with the wife real quick and he would be back within an hour. i called him an hour and a half later and he told me it was too much truck for him.

It happens. I didn't dump that Buell I rode, but with a 985cc V-twin, it was too much bike for the beginner I was at the time, and I told the seller as much. I ended up with a nice little Ninja 250 that I was very happy with.

Frankly, I'd tell the seller thanks for wasting my time and have a nice day, in the most sarcastically polite way possible, then show them my posterior. Plenty of other sellers who'll allow a test-drive without being fearful little whingers.
You can feel things through the controls that you can't notice when someone else is driving. When my clutch throwout bearing was going, I *felt* a slight rumble in the pedal when depressed first. When the transmission in my old SAAB was about to take a dump, I could feel a roughness in the shift lever (no audible grind) when downshifting into 2nd. Failing steering U-joints feel a certain way. Brake pedal pulsation when stopping can detect warped rotors before a passenger feels them. |

To me, no test drive=not interested, and I would be quite annoyed if someone waited until I came to look at the vehicle to mention that. But, what I do think is perfectly fine, and what I have done when selling vehicles, is to drive it for a little bit with the prospective buyer as a passenger, then switch places and let them drive it for a while. I also won't test drive a vehicle without the owner in the car with me, I don't want to be blamed for breaking something that actually wasn't my fault.

I would probably only offer "test rides" when selling a car. I don't need some person to mess up my car.

I have always let folks drive my cars. I think now its a better idea to drive it first so they can see how it drives with me driving, then turn it over to them.
When I had my 59 Ferrari for sale I let a guy drive it and regretted it. I had a hard time getting him to pull over and when he did he drove through a huge mudpuddle. I did not want him driving it in traffic....
