Boeing: Biggest state subsidy in U.S. history

The Boeing Co. was the beneficiary of a deal to end all deals this past weekend, when the Washington Legislature voted to extend $8.7 billion in tax breaks to the aircraft manufacturer stretching out 27 years until 2040. Gov. Jay Inslee signed the tax breaks into law Monday at the Museum of Flight.

Well, you wanted me to keep the jobs in the state, you don't want me to bribe, what else is there? Want fries with that too?

You want govt involvement and you don't like the way they do it? Tough. Pick one. If this state won't do it, the next will because they want your votes so you get to keep the bidding war going. That or everyone stops it. Never happen though since each group wants to be able to say "We are the ones that brought jobs here.". You didn't care how they do it just that they do it so stop whining.

An alternative is for us to tell government to stop getting involved in our lives but people are too selfish for that and make the excuse of "this one time and no more, we will do it.". Everyone has a "this one time...." excuse.

I don't want govt to meddle in my life but I support this idea so THIS ONE TIME AND NO MORE, let the govt get involved. Summon the devil and expect him to do your bidding and go away, never to bother you. sure.

Washington State was facing a situation they could not win. Boeing could move the assembly to anywhere if they wanted to build a new building, or they could move it to Texas where there are several facilities that could serve their purpose.

Tulsa International Airport also has a large building where aircraft were once modified/built for the Air Force. Oklahoma City has a massive ex-GM assembly plant that belongs to the City and is next to Tinker AFB. This list could go on and on, but I think my point is clear.

And if Boeing needed a lot of room Oklahoma has an area called Burns Flats. If you are interested in a lot of room cheap you should check this out.

Spaceport Facilities

Washington State was buying economic stability. Others were in line to purchase the same thing, so the product went to the highest bidder.

As long as you people bid, I will play both sides against the middle. So yes, they were purchasing economic benefits. So either all stop or it goes on. We should not complain once we decided on the path of purchasing.

Any choice really? Too many semi Detroits already exist. To avoid that fate is a paramount consideration. To attempt almost at any cost to avoid it by a municipality or state is understandable. Why this scenario of state bidding for industry ever got started or was allowed is another question.

The question is by todays actions and policies can the mess grow worse? I think it really can. Already the USA has the largest disparity of wages of any developed country in the world.

What you are saying is "There is no choice AFTER I painted myself into a corner". Why it got started or was allowed IS the same question. Basically because the voter told the politician that if he allowed it, he would be rewarded by votes. Now the same thing exists except that the circumstances are more dire. So if you get someone like SPDRUN, he'd vote the politician to kill Detroit to further some green sounding goal. Enough of him the politician will do it. So far it is good, right? I mean, what harm can come of it? Tomorrow, the goal is not so good but has some good. Next day, the goal is worse and so on. That is how we got onto that slippery slope. We have people asking for intervention for this one good thing. Tomorrow, that good thing isn't as good in the light of day but it is already there. In the meantime, that good goal we thought was a deal turns out to be not so good a deal since it gets loaded with pork. But hey, you got what you asked for regardless of the final cost. Next person comes along and wants his the same way and so on.

Of course it can go worse. Why do you think I prefer the govt not do me any favors? Why do you think the story has kids summoning the devil to take care of a small problem only to inflict a larger one not apply here?

Yep. We are also home of more self made people which that disparity is comprised of. Other places don't have the high end, just the low end.

That should only allow a reasonable disparity. What is starting to form up is that very few percentagewise have or control most the dollars.

The dollars have to come from somewhere. I think the poor and average guy is the target because his numbers are greater. Also because of him having less flexiability. He will just pay the overall price as he is easier to control and manipulate.

These issues are not confined to only the USA but there are becoming obvious signs they are getting stretched there.. Since the so called middle class is about the only place left to extract dollars they are possibly under serious siege currently.

I guess I am middle class in Canada and even here the trend is there. Our cost of living is ever upward in all sorts of ways. The determinates of middle class itself are becoming less well defined. It was well defined maybe twenty years ago. I even doubt that the situation could be cleaned up even if the will was there at this point. The people with the real power are too well entrenched.

I also have no issue with deserving people earning above average incomes. Still nobody is worth a hundred million a year and that is the compensation level still of people that have done the greatest damage to society peaking in 2008 and subsequent years..

They are also now generally entrenching themselves by appointments or most have already in many areas of government. Just the people needed to call overall government fiscal policy and look out for the citizens interests..

Many of these people walked away with fortunes and stuck it to the people they were responsible to in the process. This to me provides no indication they will be other than self centered currently.

They should instead have gone to prison for breeches of trust and general criminality. I really think the government through some complicity was actually terrified of excessive exposure. That there was not one guilty individual even charged says a lot.

Instead today they run the financial aspects of governments. What really blows me out of the water is people expect responsible behavious from this group. That is almost an absolute thing that will not be there. It is one thing these appointees have already proven in spades they totally lack.

It almost looks like a generally engineered overall scam to a simple person like myself. Possibly the only certainty is there is going to be quite the ride down the road for a large percentage of the population at some point because of this.

Boeing is the big dawg in WA state. Full disclosure, I lived in Seattle for 20 years and my sister has been working for Boeing for 5 or 6 years now, ever since she went back to school and got an MBA.

I think WA did what they felt they needed to do. Boeing scared hell out of a lot of people up there when they moved their corporate HQ to Chicago. Didn't make a lot of sense to me. Seems the Seattle area had been a good home for a long time but what do I know.

Firsts they got the president involved in preventing Boeing from opening a plant in the Carolinas, now we see why Boeing didn't make a big legal stink. Bribery + politics is a beautiful thing.
