The Hot Rod Lincoln
|
--that's what the lyrics said many years ago, no surprises here:
"it's got a Lincoln motor, it's really souped up that Model A body makes it look like a pup Got 8 cylinders and uses'em all Got overdrive, just won't stall" |
I was surprised to see it was a v12. From the song I always figured it was a fifties Lincoln v8 ohv. Kindof odd proportions with the nose out there so far.

I like the Commander Cody & His Lost Planet Airmen version.

The line about "got hot and wouldn't do no more" tips off that the engine is a Ford Flathead, or the Lincoln V12 version--still a flattie, with a history of overheating. Mr Ford insisted on routing the exhaust thru the cylinder block, so, in appearance, it appears like a more modern OHV with the intake in the valley, and the exhausts on the outside. Running the exhaust thru the block sure put a lot of heat there. It took Ford many years and several revisions to finally solve the chronic over heating.

The original Charlie Ryan song from the early fifties calls the engine out as a V-12. Commander Cody "lost" 4 of the cylinders.... BTW, the original Hot rod Lincoln car predates the song, Charlie was a member of the Lincoln and Continental Owner's Club for many years. Jim |
