marry me or pay

Ga. Man Must Pay $50,000 After Breaking Engagement to Fiancee, Appeals Court Says - Yahoo

Quote:
A Georgia man is undecided about whether to challenge a state appeals court's decision that he must pay his jilted former fiancée $50,000, his lawyer says.

Accused of breach of promise to marry, part of his defense was that he never said the words, "Will you marry me?" to her, the court filing states.
At $50K he's getting off easy.

Very interesting. Thank you.

That situation, if she could prove it in court, seems a bit different than a more common verbal agreement made by the engaged. Its hard to imagine this holding much water in the case of the latter.

The courts of divorce are irredeemably sexist. Totally stacked against males. Whether there are children involved or not.

There has to be more to this story. Probably she contributed to assets he currently has.

Getting engaged is not an absolute contractual item that marriage is guaranteed. Or not that I was aware of.

I wonder if the court is looking at this sorta like a prenup. Common law marriage considerations might also come into play.

I can remember stories of couples considered married because a man took the woman home to his house and kept her for the night. That story might just be something young men are told to scare them into taking women somewhere else.

Another story about a man takes a woman to his house for the night and she refuses to leave. He has to legally evict her. Once again, don't know if true.

Casual sex in cars and hotels might be less legally binding.

Have you guys read the story? They lived together for 11 years, 4 of those before he gave her a ring, and much of this with her having left her job to stay at home to raise their child. And him hustling other women on the side. Let the buyer beware and all but dude crossed into serious sleeze ball territory IMHO.

^^Given those details, state guidelines should prevail. He should also pay for reasonable child support.

I'd think that falls into common-law spouse territory at that point.
